Christian Louboutin Celebrates His 20th Anniversary

For two decades, Parisian designer Christian Louboutin has been designing his highly creative footwear for women. Many devoted wearers know his signature shoes by the red soles. Few realize the red soles were actually a happy accident in shoe creation. Christian was in his studio looking at a prototype and realized the shoe didn't look right. He thought that the sole was a distracting black mass, so he grabbed his assistant’s bottle of red nail polish and covered it. What a great story, do you think he could have ever imagined the impact it has made years later? Few designers have been able to capture the same feel of seduction as the infamous red sole.

Christian says that his shoe designs have evolved through the heights of the heels. Today’s spiky stiletto heel is in great contrast to the medium heels he designed twenty years ago. He credits his stem-like stilettos to earlier in his career as a garden designer. Christian believes that women are wearing higher heels today and know that his designs are for pleasure and not practicality. Ya think?

Christian’s goal is to create shoes that add music and movement to the way a woman walks. I believe most all of that to be true, but for the average woman we have another thought. The shoes are inspiring, but who is going to be there to massage my feet after just a few short hours? Can I justify the cost per wear? Do I invest in a pair and then create an outfit around it, or vice versa? They are really not just shoes, but they are a work of ART!

In late October of this past year, Christian launched a beautifully photographed book of his exquisite designs as part of his 20th anniversary celebration. For those looking for a creative gift for any shoeholic for Valentine’s Day, this would be the gift. As a side note, can someone send this blog to my husband? Hint, hint. The book would make an ideal coffee table accessory or in the guest bedroom on the dresser. I have finally finished my book on lifestyle dressing and it should be on its’ way to the publisher. I am hoping that my book will also have that same look of beauty and sophistication that will make shoppers want to leave it on their coffee tables, as well.

As for Christian, I wish him twenty more years of creative mastery!

I recently was in San Juan with my family. I think I have mentioned that my somewhat adult children know Mom is gonna go searching for that hole-in-the-wall store that has something fabulous to draw me in. As you by now know, it sadly doesn't take much.

It could be a store with blender and clock, and if the window is appealing, I'ma entering.

Case and point, as my son would say. The store window on one of the main streets across from the Marriott Hotel was an easy sell for me. Best of all, my daughter was intrigued as well. The window read Paola Cavalli, and the shoes were as bright and textured as a Lego store in the mall.

My heart began to race as we entered and were greeted by the two managing partners who show Paola's designs in the only U.S. store.

Good thing I was full from dinner, because somehow it distracted me from spending my life savings. I can't explain the correlation between a full belly and my feet, but somehow when my belly is extended, my feet are, too.

Back to Paola Cavalli. I know you are thinking she is related to the Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, but she is not. She is from Columbia, like the ever-so-beautiful Sofia Vergara from "Modern Family". Let me digress for one second. Is Sofia just not stunning and have you noticed her Cover Girl campaign? I am officially jealous without being jealous. She is so pretty to look at, I swoon. Hmm, should an adult, happily married woman swoon?

Again, back to Paola and her bright designs, reminiscent of Carmen Miranda, the actress who wore fruit on her head. Hard to forget that, quite frankly. Paola started her business in 2003 and sold her designs to women she met on walks with her toddler son. Soon after, the Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada came to town, and Paola presented Agatha with a pair of shoes.

The rest is history, as they say in the business.

Paola hopes that her work is more accessible than most designers, and priced so people can afford several pairs. I have to admit I was quite stunned at the price tag between $85-150. Paola also designs for little girls and those shoes are also carried at the San Juan store. Boy, I hope she has a little girl one day....

Paola does special orders for women who prefer a shoe in a different color. That is a wonderful offering to entice customers! People love knowing that they are getting a one of a kind item. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to stumble upon a cool store and anything different than what the mainstream offers. Check out the vibrant colors and let me know what you think.

Jason Wu for Target

Remember how stunning Michelle Obama looked at the inaugural ball in her one shoulder floor length gown? Two years ago, Mrs. Obama took a chance on an up and coming designer, and now 26 year old Jason Wu is about to launch his 43 piece line for Target. Availability begins February 5th and runs through March 6. Get your fingers on your laptop and be ready to pounce!

I expect Jason's fashions will be similar in popularity to Missoni’s line last fall. Like Missoni, Jason's goal was to make it different than his regular couture line, with new clothing and accessory designs. The clothes will offer a look of playfulness that the average woman could wear for work, brunch, or a cocktail party. Now that is what I call lifestyle dressing. A change of shoe and off we go!

The color palette theme begins with nautical colors of navy and red, a touch of mustard, a few items in blush, and a chunk of black pieces strewn in. Check out the Peter Pan collared dresses, striped black and white scoop neck sweater, and the little black dress with the nude colored belt and lace underlay. Jason also has incorporated a few bags, including a fabulous lady-like boxy shaped clutch. If the designs themselves aren't enough to make you buy, then the price tag of $20-60 for the clothes and $20-50 for accessories will do the trick. I do want to say, if you’re interested in buying the line, I wouldn't wait until the 6th to get serious about purchasing. I have a feeling it will all go fast and furious, including the black and red kitten scarf.

On another note, Target unveiled on January 12th an entirely new design platform being offered to shoppers. It’s called The Shops at Target. This ongoing program will bring upscale specialty stores like Polka Dog Bakery from Boston, Cos Bar beauty shop from Aspen, and The Candy Store from San Francisco to Target. Each specialty store will offer a six week run from their various product lines to be highlighted within local Target stores. How much better does it get than that? Do I actually need another excuse to shop at Target? Bless my credit card. Prices in The Shops at Target will range from $1-$160 with each shop designer contributing their design aesthetics to the product selection, packaging, and in-store shop displays. Target is surely thrilled to be able to offer shoppers the experience of shopping at these one of a kind specialty and boutique collections. Target is certainly ramping things up.

Building That Designer Style House at Target

Go Target, go Target, go Target! Do you see me dancing and pumping my arms in excitement? What I would give as a stylist to be in the room of the marketing and strategic planning group for Target. I’d like to thank whoever is making the decisions to bring on these designers at Target and introduce them to the rest of the world - they’re doing a great job.

Target seems to do this best with its’ collaborations, so much so that other big box retailers like Kohl's and JC Penney have followed a similar path. But remember last year’s nightmare with Italian fashion house Missoni? The Target website crashed just after a few hours due to unexpected demand. Online orders were delayed and some cancelled, leaving shoppers frustrated. Although I have to say, I have a girlfriend that just received a garment she ordered with her initial order. Now that was a good surprise!

Stacia Anderson, Target's senior vice president, is working with the team to ensure delivery issues never happen again on such a grand scale. Going forward, the company will pursue more collaborations and limited editions to help bring in more of their core customers (women), and bring them in to Target in a way that the delivery schedule runs smoothly.

Hmmm, is it a good move to focus on women mainly? You betcha! Retail analysts disagree and feel as though sooner or later the tactic of focusing on the woman shopper will become an unsustainable business model. Target’s position is surely that keeping up with new strategies, new fashions and new designers keep up the level of excitement for their shoppers. I agree with both opinions, and women are the ones looking for fresh fashions routinely.

Let me just say, I am pretty excited about what Target is doing. Let’s first reminisce about the list of designers that Target has collaborated with over the years:

1999-today - Michael Graves, the world renowned architect has been designing kitchen gadgets and small appliances by using form and function.

2003-2007 - Isaac Mizrahi, he helped put Target on the map as the go-to style destination. He has collaborated on bedding, apparel and accessories. I'd love to see him show a presence again!

2005-today - Thomas O'Brien, NY based interior designer, has been a Target staple with his affordable VintageModern look for bedding, home textiles and house wares. He design brings old and new together. Love that look myself!

2008 - Anya Hindmarch has offered her famed designer handbag designer during the peak of our recession, pricing her line between $20-50. Fans jumped at the opportunity to purchase her signature styles of satchels, shoulder bags and clutches.

2008-2009 - Thakoon Panichgul offered his take on contemporary, for the women's classic resort wear. He offered tunics, tees, tanks, coats and dresses in bright colors and prints. His collection was his take on his Eastern heritage as it was already an established hit with his celebrity clientele. I must have missed this one, as I expect it was wonderful. Gotta love a bright frock!

2008-2010 - John Derian, a 1989 artist who pioneered the trend of decoupage. He incorporated this whimsical signature style into three decor collections for Target. Very funky with a twist!

2010 - Mulberry is an English luxury label designer handbag line. Target and Mulberry priced it to sell at around $50, without losing the exquisite craftsmanship and detail. I remember seeing them in the store, thinking it would be nice to be able to afford the real McCoy. Kinda like buying a knock off Louis Vuitton.

2010 - Zac Posen, with his trendy flair, was able to take many of his creative ideas about making dresses that converted style with the easy removal of a strap or hemline. The biggest hit in the collection was a black tuxedo style jacket and wide leg pant. Much of his line reminds me of an upscale H&M.

2010 - Temple St. Claire is a 14k gold plated jewelry line of necklaces, cuffs and charms. This inspired look by the Renaissance of Italy was so popular that Lucky Magazine even pictured it.

2011 - Calypso St. Barth is a house wares line, designed to highlight Moroccan artistry. The elephant ceramic tea pot and metallic poufs were the biggest hit of the line. I wonder if a pouf is in the same category as a gotta have it black blazer in your wardrobe. I can imagine putting my feet up and using the pouf. I read that someone used it to hold recycled bags. Really?

2011 - Missoni was the largest collection from a designer ever sold at Target, with 400 available items. Need I say more?

2012 - Jason Wu is one of the hottest new young designers around. Thanks to Michelle Obama, who wore a silk one shoulder dress designed especially for her for the inauguration ball, he is now highly sought after. His line is available online and in several larger Target stores starting February 5th-March 6. I am expecting this line to make a huge showing in the stores.

Shopping for Budget Busters

Shopping for those items on your wish list that ordinarily bust the bank - how many times do you see an item in the store that you love and then check the price tag and say no way, can't swing that! This is the perfect time to go back to that item and see what the price tag now reads. I expect it will be at least at 50% off and can even be found with additional savings on weekends. This is the time to buy what you wanted earlier in the season but also focus on items that need replacing but you didn't have the budget for previously.

The best examples of higher ticket items worth checking out:

Leather anything: shoes, belts, handbags, jackets, skirts and gloves
Wool or cashmere coats, sweater or blazers
Trench or down jackets
Accessories like trendy jewelry, embellished belts, wraps, pashmina scarves, hats or beautiful umbrellas
Cocktail wear
If you like fur or even the look of fur, check out jackets, vests and yes- shoes (Jeannie, are you cringing?)
Items that will transition into spring

We have had the oddest winter here in NC. Here it is mid January and just recently I have been pulling out my winter coats. Because it hasn't been exceptionally cold, it's been a wonderful opportunity to continue to layer with sweaters and vests. This is a great time to think about buying items that are worn layered now and alone when it warms up.

The best example I found was during a recent trip to JMcLaughlin at North Hills Shopping Center. Erin and Molly are probably some of the nicest people in retail I have come across in a long time. This store really leans towards classic dressing with well-made garments. More she-

she than Talbots. I was told through the grape vine many years ago that this company has fabulous sales. I believe they opened in early spring of 2011, so I figured one way or another I would eventually wander in for a sale. I did that just last week.

Most everything is 60% off and the store is ripe for the picking. Molly has beautiful long legs so who better than her to model for me and try on a dress that is easily layered with tights or leggings for winter and a simple flat or boot. Molly could transition this in the spring with a bare leg and a casual sandal. Either way, I love a good leather tote and the easy jean jacket that she had thrown over her shoulder.

Endless possibilities exist with this striped boat neck dress that would pack and travel beautifully.

Lastly, I would be remiss in my job as a stylist if I didn't remind everyone that this is the time to buy any fine silk or sequined items that you wanted to build into your wardrobe. Since we can all agree that sequin's aren't going anywhere and is now considered more of a staple for holiday dressing or a night out, buying the best quality sale garment is the true trick and treasure all in one. Personally, I prefer my embellishments not to fall from the fabric as I move and shake, and I have been known to move and shake!

This little black number is more than half price and looks great with a dark wash jean and heels or a classic satin pant or skirt. Can you tell I am salivating?

So take one last peek in your closet, pull together your wish list and a credit card, and check out what half price or even better values are out there.

My own twist to a New Year, New You

I have given this a lot of thought since actually Thanksgiving. I am so grateful for so many things that I have in my life. My family, my health and the freedom and ability to do what I love (fashion). Instead of making unrealistic goals for the New Year, I decided to put a twist to it and make it be all about fashion, my wardrobe and my family, as well. Since we are empty nesters, I can only do a few things at a time that will actually make a difference one way or another. View my family checklist and the before and after issues and compromises.

1. My daughter’s closet and drawers were bursting with items, from as far back as maybe junior high, that she hadn't worn for years. The plan at Thanksgiving was to convince her to clean everything out, consign the clothing, make a little money on the clothing, and take back to school what warm weather clothing was needed after Christmas break.

THE ACTUAL OUTCOME

The idea came with some opposition, but agreement that it needed to be done. The compromise was that it would be done after our family vacation at Christmas. Did I mention this was one closet consult I would not be doing? About eight hours later and with six bags of clothing, my daughter completed her task and was off to Plato's Closet to consign her clothes. I expected she would get $50 for what she was offering to the store and by golly the payoff came in at $53-BAM! The rest was donated to charity.

2. I can't actually say I haven't been in my son’s closet in over two years. The last time I visited his closet was to evaluate what suits he had, as we were on our way to purchase a new suit for future interviews. I do recall pitching quite a few items that he brought to college some six years before. A little scary I may add. Bless his future girlfriend that may end up tackling the job of sorting it out.

What I did quickly notice when we were away together over the holidays was his underwear that had long seen their day (only because I did most of the laundry), and a few t-shirts and undershirts that definitely needed to be retired. How is it that a treasured fraternity t-shirt with holes still belongs anywhere besides at the bottom of a drawer? Certainly not on a family vacation!

THE ACTUAL OUTCOME

While on vacation I always mention to my family that I need to briefly check out the local mall or street store boutique. I like to see how fashion and styles differ, as well check out what people are wearing. My family knows this is not an unusual request, although they also know it will be a relatively quick trip into the store, and that I personally am looking for a fashion souvenir. My son and I whizzed through Macy's and we revamped his underwear and undershirt collection in a matter of a half an hour. That even included time spent evaluating brands and fit. I miss those days of shopping with my son, so although brief, it was quite productive. The bigger question is has he now pitched his older ones from his drawer to make room to the new ones, or just stacked them on top of one another. I can't go there!

3. My husband’s pants. Let's just again mention the article that came out in GQ several months back speaking about Raleigh being the one of the 35 worst dressed cities. It was somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas when I decided my spouse was not going to be on any list or lumped into a category that was negative when it came to dressing. That would almost be sacrilegious! My husband has fortunately not acquired a large middle age bulge around the middle, so he looks great in flat front pants.

THE ACTUAL OUTCOME

I have pulled 100% of his triple pleated pants and have only kept a few of his double pleated pants. He has moved into 2012 with pants that are flat in the front and on trend with today’s men’s fashion. Can you imagine having a wife that is a stylist and having to keep up with her fashion do's and don'ts? I actually am proud of him, he does quite well on his own. He has no problem bargain hunting at Nordstrom Rack to find his own great value piece to add to his wardrobe.

4. Lastly, I must talk about my personal twist for the New Year. I needed to go through my brooches, sliders and earrings and get them organized. I have them in three different holders. My necklaces are neatly hung on a slat wall but my earrings have no organization to them. The other issue is my tights drawer. I love tights and wear them constantly in the fall and winter.

THE ACTUAL OUTCOME

Well, has it worked for me? Partially. I have colored out my jewelry to the small lucite drawers and organized by gold and silver. I have lumped together my sliders for my Omega chain. I also found some earrings that I was missing for several weeks and had actually turned the area upside down looking for them. SO…that is a major plus because they were a pair that my husband gave me. As for my tights, I haven't tackled that yet, but I feel like I have through the end of the month.

By the end of the month I will have completed two goals I have long since set for myself:

1. The tights drawer will be completely organized and colored out as well.

2. My book on "Lifestyle Dressing" will be completed and in my marketing person’s hands for her to use her handy dandy red marker on to slash with edits.

Charm Bracelets, the Latest Fashion Trend!

Oh, the sweet memories of my mother’s clinking charms on her bracelet. My mother purchased a gold bracelet when she was first married. She had a charm for each of her daughter’s births, her wedding anniversary, travels, favorite sports, and others that we gave her. I used to love to put it on and look at the charms and ask my mother about each one. Somehow, her explanations never got old. Charm bracelets of old are equivalent to today’s over-bought Pandora.

Pandora offers beads and charms in every color, sport and life theme possible. Personally, I like a traditional one-time charm bracelet that speaks to the person wearing it. So much of one’s personality can come to light when wearing a bracelet that shares the life you have led.

This past season, I worked with a client who had a charm bracelet that was purchased for her about ten years ago. She had not added to it since before the birth of her last child three years ago. We purchased a charm similar to the other children's and she was amazed at how the price of gold had increased. I encouraged her to bite the bullet and consider it an heirloom piece of jewelry to incorporate into her wardrobe. I expected it would be something she would wear to church. I couldn't help but think of my mom and how much she has enjoyed her charm bracelet over the years. The trick in wearing a traditional charm bracelet is to feel as though it is not for dress only, but great with a pair of jeans, white blouse, black blazer and some heels. Think of it as an extension of a LBD uniform!

As the fashion trend of charm bracelets increases the popularity of charms, there is now a wide variety to choose from. Gold or silver, charms offering lifestyle glimpses: family, fashion (a shoe), art, medieval times or even just colors. How to choose? Keep these thoughts in mind:

Is this going to be a fashion item or an item to pass down to the family?
Do you prefer gold or silver?
What kind of financial investment are you willing to make?
How do you envision wearing this? Casual, dressy, or both?
Can you make the commitment to add to it if you decide to make it a family heirloom?
Gauge the amount of pleasure it will give you and decide if it is worth it in the long run
If you decide to make it a fashion piece, what do you want it to say? Big and bold or soft and feminine?

Lastly, if you are looking for a hobby, maybe this is something you want to consider. Shopping for antique charms can be great fun, and I expect will offer a great deal of satisfaction when you find a great treasured charm. If you decide to go the Pandora route, then I would opt for going online to find retired charms and even availability on eBay. Regardless, have fun and remember that fashion always comes full circle. Just like my client and my mother, it is something wonderful to pass along to the family. Hmmm? I wonder if this is a good time for me to let my mother know I want her to put my name on it in years to come. Now I'm thinking.....

You go, Tim Gunn!

I recently read the wonderfully warm mentor, Tim Gunn from Project Runway, is expanding his television visibility this year. He is co-hosting a new daytime talk show, The Revolution, which airs January 16th at 2pm on ABC. Each week the health and lifestyle show will highlight one woman's five-month-long weight loss experience. Friday is the big reveal. How is this program not a winner! Everyone loves to watch transformations. I live for that same exciting moment when my own clients have a similar positive life changing experience. Usually that special moment comes in front of a mirror and my grin is as big as my clients. It is the realization that positive change, big or small, is remembered and felt for a long time.

Tim's role on the show is to supply the fashion and styling advice to these women whose bodies are undergoing weight loss related changes. He is co-hosting with Ty Pennington, nutritionist Harley Pasternak, women's health expert Dr. Jennifer Ashton, and Dr. Tiffanie Davis Henry, relationship expert. This show hits what I talk about regularly: dressing for your lifestyle. The Revolution will take everyday people and their lives, and offer advice and support for various issues so they can succeed! It is truly a feel good show.

As Tim continues to highlight his expertise, he will also put his stamp on being the official "style consultant" with Weight Watchers. He will consult on the mega successful Jennifer Hudson ads and offer tips on how to dress during the stages of weight loss. He is rebranding himself towards becoming a plus-size advocate. As our population continues to grow in body size, the positive mentoring of Tim Gunn will be a much needed gift. Acceptance and tolerance, while teaching about plus size style and fashion, is the mantra for his new endeavors. Personally, I am thrilled that "What Not To Wear" will have another show that supports fashion for all body types, but more importantly plus size women will have a voice.

As for plus size lines like the new Eloquii line from The Limited, these shows now offer new opportunities to highlight their fabulous plus size fashions. If it was up to me, and you know it isn't, I'd ring up Tim and get him to bring on Eloquii as the official clothing line for the new show. I am digging the looks! Like I said at the beginning, you go, Tim Gunn!

Where do you get the inspiration for your design?

I often hold a specific woman or event (sometimes real, sometimes not) in my mind when I am designing. An example of this was when you asked me to design a pair of earrings for your client, Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, so she could wear them at the Grammies. The opportunity to match my aesthetic to a recording artist, her dress and that big event was thrilling. The design I developed (and that she wore on her Grammy winning night!) informed many other pieces I offered throughout the year. What makes my work cohesive is my artistic aesthetic around color, scale, and texture. I love to play with these artistic elements using gemstone beads, metals and chain. I like to think my work is easy to wear and enhances the woman. I want my customer to wear my jewelry, and not have my jewelry wear her.

We often collaborate on jewelry designs for clients. As you know, I love to look at your materials and hand select stones. Where do you find your materials? Do you shop seasonally, or do you just find things you like?

My works have continued to evolve. One major addition in December was sterling cuff bracelets. What makes them special is that each one is truly unique. They are all hand scribed, etched and forged. I have some 'stock' designs, as well as more personalized custom bracelets. There is a picture of a personalized bracelet on my website. I think I will always work with gemstones because I love the color they provide, but metal holds such a fascination for me that rings, cuffs and pendants are the next obvious steps. There is so much for me explore with metal and color!

What Today’s Trendy Man is Buying

Recently I was thumbing through the Fifth Anniversary Issue Esquire 2011 Fall Big Black Book, which is the Style Manual for Successful Men. My first question is what actually makes a man successful. Is it wardrobe or his character? I think both. A greatly dressed man certainly makes my head turn, but really it is a man of strong character that really makes me think of success. But since it isn't up to me to judge what Esquire Magazine is putting on their cover, let's just talk wardrobe. Here is a list of what they recommend for the successful man who is looking to update his wardrobe. Check out my own personal color commentary to this fabulous guide.

ISIA Statement Suit. A statement suit a pinkish-brownish windowpane suit. According to Esquire, men are no longer throwing caution to the wind and are willing to be either very brave or very foolish. I would rather put my money in something other than pinkish when investing in a windowpane suit. Make sure you kill the look by adding a really cool shirt, tie or even a pocket square, but opt for brown with cream or even a charcoal suit.

The Dries Van Noten Wool Coat. Heavy wools, flannels and melton wools that are tightly woven are popping up all over for men this season. Dries Van Noten is setting its’ own trend by offering a coat made of kemp, a coarse, crinkly wool. It is tweedy in appearance and will weather in cold situations. Great for anyone living in weather challenging places, but for most of us a nice wool mid-thigh coat will suffice!

The Paul Smith Velvet Blazer. A double-breasted navy velvet blazer. Stunning in color and the fabric appears so rich. Look instead for a single breasted brown or camel jacket. Easier to pair with dress jeans, and a boot. Paul Smith offers this jacket for $1075, but I bet Calvin Klein has something that may do the trick!

An 11-hole pebble grain hunting boot. Yes, timeless in shape and construction, but I am thinking any lace-up dark boot will work from day to night. Putting money into a nice leather shoe always makes any outfit look polished.

The Belvest Unlined Shetland Blazer. Talk about learning something new every day. A shetland blazer is kin to a Harris Tweed, but with a different process. Belvest has taken processing to a whole new level by deducing how to wash the stiffness out of Shetland wool without warping the wool. Their solution was to construct the jacket so its proportions are a touch off kilter, allowing the shrinkage to be brought down to its’ intended size. Alone, this is a fascinating feat, but to have the jacket be unlined and the wool soft is amazing! The price tag on this jacket is $1095. I vote for this fabulous fabric, as it will offer comfort, quality and most of all a great style for years to come. I expect it will also age like a fine wine. Personally, I'd wait to start looking for discounts to help with the cost.

The Brunello Cucinelli Double Breasted Non-Suit. Can't tell you what a non-suit is exactly.... Most men are cautious about selecting a double breasted suit as they feel like a gangster or banker on Wall Street. This designer has actually combined two pieces, plaid and houndstooth, and woven in black and navy yarns. The unlined suit features buttons on the jacket that are narrowed from its’ previous double breasted look. The end look offers an ooh-la-la appearance without looking ridiculous. I'm hoping that this will be a trend that we will see more of. Amazing how moving the buttons in closer and keeping a garment unlined can make all the difference.

The Prada Tumbled Leather Bag. Just like the writer states, “Investing in status luggage can be fought with peril". Anytime we see someone with designer bags or luggage we think one of three things. Great bag, knock-off, or show off. The tumbled leather bag offered by Prada for the successful man is just that, a serious investment item. Like many fine leathers, it only looks better over time, and often what I refer to as vintage. The price tag is pretty stiff at $2,550 and it is safe to say there is something out there that is comparable for less, but a great item for any guy.

The Allegri Winter Linen Jacket. This seems like an oxymoron in conception, but actually does make sense. It takes the look of a tweed jacket (not of heavy wool) and is actually summer linen. The Italian company has perfected the process by waterproofing the yarns and inserted a microlight nylon down vest, buttoned into the coat for warmth. It is multi-tasking at its best for versatility and style. Now that is fabulous, but again comes with a price tag of $895. That jacket is great for those living in winter warm weather climates. If I could shake my money tree a little more, I would purchase this for my father in Florida, as it would combine his favorite look of tweed with his like of really linen fabric with the warmth needed for slightly cool weather nights. Better than that, it would go with his khaki's, since that is his uniform trouser of choice!

Holiday Shopping Traditions

For those in Great Britain and formal British Colonies, Boxing Day is a significant holiday that occurs right after Christmas. Boxing Day, traditionally December 26 or the second weekday after Christmas, is a bank or public holiday. Boxing Day is very similar to the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. Recently, British shops have broken with tradition to have sales and often dramatically discount goods. Just like Black Friday, British retailers look to make their largest profits of the year. As in the States, retailers open early and stay open late to offer store busters and loss leaders. The holiday shopping day has been so successful over the years that stores often have to secure crowds by providing numbers to allow customers to enter and exit in a way that avoids chaos. The online version of shopping is called Cyber Boxing Day and continues to grow in popularity.

The background of Boxing Day originates when employers used to give their servants or employees a gift of money or food in a small box since they frequently had to work Christmas Day. During medieval times, the lord of the manor would gather his workers and distribute boxes of tools, food and cloth. This was compensation for work being done throughout the year. In later years similar stories have been told that servants were able to take boxes or hampers home for their families. This tradition still happens but generally the week before Christmas. Another variation of this theme occurred in churches and public places. Townspeople would drop off money, clothing or other gently used items to be donated to the poor. Children were encouraged to give up their year old toys and clothing, or toys and clothing they never wore, to the poorer among them.

For those looking for post-Christmas buys here in the States, beware. Many shoppers are hitting the stores to return unwanted gifts. No need to re-gift an item when most stores will take it back. Keep in mind a few things when returning unwanted clothing to stores:

* Make sure the item has a ticket attached

* Having a receipt will guarantee you receive the money that is due to you

* Do not feel as though you have to purchase a replacement item that same day

* Take a store credit, as stores will mark down items even further in the New Year

* Early spring items will hit the stores in February and your store credit will allow you fresh goods to choose from

* Bring your patience and remember store employees are doing the best they can. That is why a gift receipt or tag is imperative!

Tacky Holiday Themed Clothes Are Back!

Ugly holiday sweaters are making a comeback. Really? I have been pitching out holiday sweaters and shirts in client’s closets for years! I have seen some doozies over the years, too. How do you evaluate something that may have sentimental value and say ok, time to go. That is a common theme I hear from clients.

I personally don't have any of holiday themed clothing floating around my closet, but I do understand the feelings and emotions of what a garment may bring to a person. Oops, come to think about it my husband does have some old Rutgers t-shirts floating around on his side of the closet, but they are definitely not holiday themed!

Back to ugly holiday sweaters. The shirts and sweaters I have seen over the years in closets were hand painted, bedazzled, embroidered and appliqued. In the 1980's, I found an artist that hand painted dresses and shirts. I think she sold her wares at the big flea market in Boca Raton near where my grandmother lived, and I often visitedmy grandparents during the winter to get away from the cold of Philadelphia. I was constantly amazed by the number of people purchasing from her.

The designer I remember most distinctly is Michael Simon. Michael got his start in 1979 in NYC, using his lifesavings for a batch of colorful yarn and weaving them into oversized sweaters. His signature look was bold creations with appliques, embroidery, sequins, beads, and crochet accents. Michael’s statement knits could be seen at all the better stores with most holidays celebrated on the entire sweater. Over the top was clearly the theme, but just like any good designer, Michael’s creations have evolved over time and are current with today’s looks.

Years ago, when I worked with Macy's, that was the big ticket item. The sweaters came to the hip, generally had three large buttons and were suitable for anyone that looked like a line backer. But they sold! Over the years, I have seen knock-offs and last year’s styles at Steinmart or TJ Maxx.

Last week on the NBC Today Show, they did a segment on ugly holiday sweater parties being the rage. They showed a typical party, with the guests all wearing tacky holiday tops and sweaters. The old adage that what is old, once again becomes new!

Fashion does come full circle over time, but I am not sure this is one of those cases where it’s appropriate. The tacky holiday fashion belongs more to a vintage theme party, than every day wear. I love the concept because I expect for many it wasn't too hard to find a top or sweater to wear. It takes the pressure off having to pull together a fabulous holiday outfit, and certainly is a major conversational topic. At this point as a stylist, I can't make a recommendation on what to pair your tacky top with besides a simple colored bottom. If you have tacky, tinsel ball earrings or jewelry, you may as well go for it!

On a personal note.....I hope the New Year’s party I attend has some of that action going on, as I would love to snap some pictures and add it to my collection of pictures for my upcoming book!

Holiday Party Time......What to Wear, What to Wear

Have you ever gotten an invite to a party, and then when the day came you looked in your closet and discovered you didn’t have anything to wear? And then normally we all think to pull out our little black dress. Well, let's not do that this year, I vote no. Let's work with what we already have in our closet and invest in just a little something-something to pull it together.

First is the planning part:

What invitations or parties are you expecting to attend this year?

Day or evening events?

Casual or Dressy?

Once you have determined your commitments, saunter on into the closet to see if you have any of the following to pull off a fabulous holiday look:

A crisp white blouse
A black satin or nylon camisole or blouse
A cream top, any fabric, with sleeves
A fitted black or winter white skirt or pant
A satin pant
Any sequined garment
Black tights with a pattern
An open cardigan with ruffles
A tuxedo or tailored cropped black, brown or white shirt
A belt in any other color than black or brown

The best suggestion I can give is to wear what you have, but add one key brightly colored accessory or underpinning to pull together a holiday look. All it takes is one item of either color or size to provide a more festive feel to your appearance. It can be a belt, a necklace, scarf, or any item that is jewel tone, embellished or heavily textured. Keep in mind that this would be the ideal time not to buy full price but shop consignment stores, discount and trendy shops.

Most consignment stores are eager to get holiday items in and out the door and may be willing to negotiate the price. Stores like H&M, Old Navy, Forever 21, Kohls and Steinmart carry inexpensive trendy items that will fit the bill perfectly. This is not the time to invest in quality, especially if you have more than one holiday party to attend. I usually preach the importance of cost per wearing, but for trendy holiday items, I vote for the most bang for your buck without appearing the tasteless or tinsel tacky.

Some items to consider:

A jewel tone belt
A colored suede pump
A brightly colored feathered necklace
A faux fur collar
A layered necklace
An embellished silk or nylon scarf
A jewel tone camisole or shell

Try pairing this fuchsia racerback tank with a dark wash jean and a feathered earring in similar tones. For a dressier holiday look, grab a dark brown, maroon or burgundy color pant from your closet and add a bronze heel. Jewelry should be simple and not matching, so opt for an earring with brown stones or beads.

I love a red shoe! A red shoe is only good if it can be worn a multiple of ways. Try not to select a red shoe that is overly trendy. Look for a classic line that can be worn on many occasions. I see this shoe being worn with a slim pant, a crisp white fitted blouse or any jewel tone solid shell and a dynamite necklace or draping patterned silk scarf. The red shoe should be a nice alternative to the ever so boring and predictable black pump!

Great colorful mixed crystal and brass necklace. This alone makes its’ own statement. Keep your top simple, whether it is a shell, camisole or blouse. As for earrings, find a flat gold or brass colored hoop.

The most important thing to remember is find items that won't bust the bank and that may be worn again after the holidays, if needed. Think outside your box and take cues from discount stores. Have fun with accessorizing and remember to leave the LBD in the closet and go for other simple pieces that are easy to add a little glam to by adding one dynamic item.

Cyber Monday Shopping

If you have had your fill of turkey and relatives and now you are trying to catch your breath before Cyber Monday hits, I thought I would give you some quick food for thought. Can you believe I actually mentioned food again? Before you start cruising the internet and reading through the dozens of emails, all advertising cyber deals, think about the following questions, particularly if you get the bug to shop for yourself and not for holiday presents:

What makes this internet offer such a good one?

What is written in the small print - is there a minimum spend to get the deal?

Have you bought from them before?

Is it a secured site?

Does it offer free shipping and return postage?

Can the item be returned?

What is the delivery time promised? Express or snail mail? Estimated delivery time?

If it is not being offered at at at least 50% off or more, forget it. It probably isn't worth the effort.

Is it an item that will enhance your wardrobe, or just a splurge?

There are some items that are worth checking out that are worth investing in at this point in the season, and that you may have been not been able to look at previously:

A good leather or suede boot
A wool coat
A leather jacket
A classic raincoat
A long strand of pearls
A rich leather handbag
A good leather belt with a handsome buckle, and remember to go up one size. If you buy size 28 jeans, buy a 30 inch belt.
Your favorite brand and style t-shirt in multiple colors
Your favorite scent

Big box stores will provide the biggest draw for sale items, as well as specific designers or brand names. If you like a certain brand or designer, look at the site. And don't dilly dally! If you find something that piques your interest - go for it. I guarantee if you check back, it will have sold out.

Happy shopping, but remember a great sale on wardrobe items is only good if it’s something that will work with your existing wardrobe. This is not the time to build a wardrobe. This is, however, a great time to do a quick, and I mean quick, closet evaluation and see if you can catch any steals online to complement what you already have.

Calling All Women!

Calling all women, calling all women! Do you think youcould rock this look in the Triangle? Can you imagine getting up in the morningand throwing on this cute little red dress with some black tights and boots?Would you have the confidence to go from your everyday attire, whether it isjeans or that little black skirt, and wear this dress proudly?

This dress is designed by Project Runway alum DanielFeld, and we found it at Fashionista.com. All of his goods are not only made in the good old USA, but in NYC toboot! Think about being inside his factory in the fashion industry and seeing theproduction line of his fashion line. If you have never been to a NYC designersfactory or warehouse, that alone is worth the trip. I will never forget myfirst time going to the Carlisle and Etcetera warehouse that sells previousseason’s merchandise. My mother and I years ago walked down the street lookingfor the building and were shocked to see the lack of signage on the buildingfront. We stumbled upon the address, and opened the door to an unlit hallway.Picture me, holding my large purse like I was ready to bash someone over thehead, and my mother just chattering away.

Inside the rusted out elevator door, we puched the buttonfor the third floor and when the doors opened we strode out into a massive openwarehouse with about 100 women frantically shopping as if the goods wereleaving on a freight truck in minutes. As for the ten men holding women'spurses, they just looked blankly into space, probably hoping they could leavebefore closing. I have seen that look many times before, and it ain't pretty. Ah,the smell of a musty warehouse full of bargains. Two hours later we rode backdown the elevator with packages in hand looking for a cab. That was myexperience with NYC warehouses, so I can imagine what Daniel's design houselooks like. To rent space alone in the NYC fashion district, you are going toneed design a line that is gonna sell and sell well!

Back to my original questions. The little red dresscertainly looks comfortable and actually could be worn several different ways.With a poncho, with tights, leggings, a cigarette leg jean, a long sleevefitted t-shirt underneath for warmth, with necklaces, scarves, ballerina flats,boots, or pumps, and that is all just for fall and winter.

My theory as a stylist is that it is all about comfortand making the garment be a part of your lifestyle. Wear the dress instead ofit wearing you. All it takes is a little confidence in how you look and feel init. It could easily become a wardrobe staple and essential item to build upon.This red dress is trendy on, but only if you make it appear that way.

Give thought to wearing it for everyday wear and how itcould be part of your wardrobe. Could you strut yourself into Whole Foods (myhusband calls it Whole Paycheck) in that cute dress? Actually, I dress up mostdays and often do run into Whole Foods with heels and feel quitecomfortable. I refuse to lie down andsay we don't and can't wear trendy essential clothing in the Triangle.

Someone obviously is, because stores like CT Weekends areselling European designers and are doing just fine. Daniel’s little asymmetricred frock isn't any trendier and quite honestly, is right on par with what theyare showing in their store. I do believe the Triangle is becoming more and moreof a fashion forward location. With the growing number of fashion shows andemerging designers in the area, fashionable options that don’t come from bigbox stores are increasing quickly. Wouldn’t it be great to get off GQ’s list ofmost unfashionable cities in America? The easy way to do that is to getcomfortable with dressing with purpose and for your lifestyle. This littlefrock could be worn with flats for day with a scarf, and with heels at nightwith a faux fur poncho to theatre at the DPAC. Actually, I think I have almosttalked myself into it ladies! Should we check the price first?

A final tip.....I bought an asymmetric blackcotton/spandex fitted dress about five years ago when that look was quite big. It's still one of my favorites, but last season I had the hem line cut straightacross and ta-da! I got a brand new look!

Black Friday Shopping Expert Tips and Tricks

Retail was up .5% for the month of October. Hooray!

What does that actually mean? Retail sales haven’t showna positive increase in forever, and stores have traditionally relied upon heavydiscounting and carrying less inventory. As you may know, Black Friday iscalled that because stores have taken the upcoming holidays, discounted theirgoods for shoppers who have the day after Thanksgiving off and can go shopping,and crossed their fingers that it would allow them to show a profit.

Let's chat about upcoming shopping for Black Friday. Isit worth fighting the crowds of crazy people all in search of what they thinkis the bargain of the year? If you are looking for clothing, do the researchbeforehand. Most stores have a pretty good idea of what will be on special salenext Friday. If they choose not to share with you that is one thing, but theinformation should be available. You need to weigh the savings versus thestress of it all.

I had my first experience shopping on Black Friday lastyear with my daughter. It wasn't pretty, but I will do it again ‘cause I lovemy daughter. I frequently don't do malls on weekends. There has to be a reallygood reason for me to shop, and the same thought applies to shopping on anyholiday. A holiday is meant to be just that. A break from your job! Not that Idon't love it, but the crowds kill me.

I figure I log anywhere from 15 - 30 hours alone in justone of our various malls in the Triangle on any given week. That doesn'tinclude shopping centers, or one-stop destinations. My car survival kit isn't quite the same asmost traveling salesman's. What you typically find in my car or purse on aregular basis is meant to help with my job of shopping.

Let's compare notes and see if you are as equipped for atypical shopping expedition with a personal shopper!

· Two bottles of water, usually cold at 10 am andwarm by 3 pm,

· a small cooler if I plan ahead, with carrots, anapple and maybe some cheese,

· a bag of my favorite snacks, typically rawcashews or smoked almonds,

· an empty Starbucks cup, from my morning routineand just waiting to be thrown out,

· several ink pens, because I am forever losingthem between the seats,

· black flats, for when my heels don’t like myfeet anymore and my dogs are barking,

· straight pins and safety pins, for showingclients what the garment will look like when hemmed,

· a jewelry chain to measure what length myclients might want a necklace made to accommodate their necklines,

· a pad of paper, and

· a good old fashion yellow pages.

Now let's chat in terms of how you need to prepareyourself for Black Friday, and what to expect. Do your research and have aplan. Now if you’re not going for anything in particular, then are you crazy?

1. A somewhat good night’s sleep, either Wednesdaythe 23^rd, or if you’re hard core and don't plan on going to bed onthe 24^th, forget my suggestion.

2. A plan of action. Decide what stores are mostimportant to you and go there first.

3. Comfortable shoes - rubber soles are a must. Themall floor will get old quickly while fighting the crowds.

4. An outfit with no more than two layers. Asweater that can be thrown in a purse or around your waist is good for changingtemperatures in stores, the mall and outdoors.

5. A lightweight purse with a front closure or bodybag purse. Don't give pick pockets an opportunity to ruin your fun.

6. A bottle of water and a snack.

7. Bring your patience, because you will be waitingin long cashier register lines.

8. Any online coupons that might be used along withregular store discounts.

9. Walkie talkies (just kidding). A cell phone willwork as well. You may lose your family member in a store. Or is that the plan?

10. Lastly,bring your smile, as this is supposed to be fun and not too painful. Hmmm, I'mjust saying.

So, what might bring me out shopping besides my daughterasking me - nothing. No discount is great enough for me not to be homerelaxing. If you do happen to run into me, I’ll be sporting a large cup ofcoffee, an extended belly from eating way too much the day before, and possiblymy mother and mother-in-law on my arm. I can't imagine why they will want tocome. My mother doesn't get up before 8 am. My mother-in-law is so little anddoesn't hear well, and I could easily lose her under a rack or in a corner andshe wouldn't hear me yelling for her. As for my daughter, truth be told, Iwouldn't trade the craziness of it all to not be with her. Soon enough shewon't be as determined to find a great buy at the Gap.

Fashion Sneakers v Athletic Sneakers

Converse sneakers are not only timeless, but ageless foranyone who wears them. I'm just saying....

A friend of mine at Raleigh Racquet Club was rocking herblack Converse with black jeans, print shirt and black cardigan. What I lovedwas despite being a member of the over 50 crowd, she is comfortable enough inher own style to wear them casually and for fun. TJ, is actually one of themost classy ladies I know. She is a true southerner with the most gentle wayabout her. So seeing her today in her Chuck Taylor's was a hoot!

It made me think, though, so let's get back to wearingConverse sneakers or sneakers in general as part of your wardrobe. We all wearsneakers for a variety of reasons.

* for athletic reasons when participating in sports

* for walking long distances or for travel

* for comfort, because having another type of shoe forcasual wear may be too hard to select and not worn enough to warrant purchasing

* as a fashion statement (now we are talking)

These are my thoughts on sneakers. Sneakers are a neededlifestyle item best worn with sweats, warm-up suits, shorts, capri's, andathletic wear. A regular athletic sneaker doesn’t look so good with jeans thatare blue (or any other color) unless they are more of a "fashionsneaker".

Fashion sneakers usually have a look and personality oftheir own. I love a good fashion sneaker, and when I see someone in publicwearing them it makes me smile. They’re so versatile, and can be worn with mostcolored jeans, summer casual dresses, a cool leather pant, free flowing skirts,leggings, jeggings and maxi dresses. You either get it and do it, or you don’t.Typically, I find fashion sneakers at department stores, places like DSW andonline at Zappos, like these:

Next time you go shopping for a casual sneaker, thinkabout how you actually plan to wear them. TJ's look with her Chuck Talyor'sConverse gave her an updated, but certainly not over the top, casual look (greatfor the pro-shop that she was working in, and comfortable enough to spend acouple hours on her feet). Fashion sneakers tend to offer an option for thosewho just can't pretend to want to wear a Nike or Addidas athletic sneaker withtheir everyday casual wear. So here’s to all those willing to walk on the wildside!

Shopping for Jeans

A friend of mine went shopping for jeans, and sent me the following note, which I thought I would share with you.

"Well, I went jeans shopping yesterday and now I know why all the jeans models in have their pelvises tilted back and knees bent --- skinny jeans are not flattering on upper thighs unless you've had them liposucked completely out. The way they pose keeps their thighs un-engaged hahaha. Anyway, I do like the ones I got, and they are dark in color and mid-rise. Thanks for the advice!

ps: I sure hope low rise jeans are on their way out. An average butt in lowrise jeans with tight thighs looks awful. It's like the ultimate worst thingyou could do to make your butt look unattractive: put a big 'ol horizontal line(waistband) almost at the fattest part, then make the thighs look like wads of gum stuck on top of toothpicks. The new stretchy jeans make it even worse, since they totally expose flaws, instead of holding things in place."

Speaking at the Art Institute

Lucky for them!

Oh, to be young and so eager to make your mark in theworld. I remember that feeling so well. Maybe I have been around just too darnlong and am just seasoned like an avocado that is begging to be peeled andeaten. Wait a minute, am I talking about food or the students I spoke to thispast week at the Art Institute of Durham?

I was invited to speak to a class of 15- 20 studentsranging in ages from 18-29 years old. That is a lot of years in between! Ateighteen, I was just so excited to be graduating from high school and headingto college. Free at last, free at last! As my parents dropped me at college I'mpretty sure I was not crying, but celebrating. I was eager to start workingtowards what I was most passionate about - fashion, of course!

The instructor at the Art Institute, Jessica Palmer, is adesigner I met some months before at an emerging designer show, fashionSPARK.She designs gorgeous wedding dresses and also teaches several classes at theArt Institute. She asked me to speak to the group about what I do as a stylist.No problem for me. I went as far back as my days with dressing Barbies as achild to my first retail job and on and on. I won't bore you with all thedetails now, wait until my book comes out in 2012.

After I was done speaking to the group, the students eachtook turns stating their work interest and most recent internship. I marveledat the many accomplishments and was quick to recognize several motivatedstudents. As I offered feedback and the dialogue flowed, I appreciated wherethey were at this point in their lives. So much ahead of them. I encouragedthem to make the most of each internship and although they may find it is notexactly what they want to do for a career, it will offer insight to otherpossibilities. Recognizing opportunity and then being aggressive in what I call"a nice sort of way". It is the person who applies for a job, thenfollows up again and again until they hear something one way or another(Jeannie, do recognize this in me)? Another interesting thing was that one of thestudents interviewed me last year by phone for one of her projects. Once shementioned that, I giggled. I do remember that. I also remember telling hersimilar things to what I did the group. Here are my thoughts and motto's that Itry to hold fast to myself in what I do as a stylist:

I am hired by people or companies because they do want tomake change in their lives from where they are now. So make the change!
My goal is to make it a fun and non-stressful process forthe client
A smile or laugh goes a long way especially when anoutfit really doesn't seem to work well for them
No sense in complaining about our bodies. Everyone hassomething that should and can be accentuated. Beauty is truly within
Lastly, when I have completed my work with a client, theycan expect to be able to jump into their closets daily and have the items theyneed for their lifestyle!

Looking and feeling good as we continue to age

A few months ago, I got a phone call from a woman whosaid I worked with her mother some 15 years ago. Her mother was now in herearly eighties, and had since lost her husband and remarried. She needed somehelp with coordinating what she had in her wardrobe. Betty's new husband lovedwhen she dressed up and I could truly see she was quite smitten with him.Imagine being in your eighties and your husband taking pride in what you’rewearing. May I live that long and still want to wear my Spanx and heels and thatSid's eyesight still be good enough to notice I am wearing either.

I have to admit, I was quite excited about reconnectingwith my client from 15 years ago. I was anxious to see if I remembered her, butalso to help her with her with paring down her wardrobe. I expect it is verystressful for most seniors to let go of their belongings. According to herdaughter Sally, Betty went shopping recently and wasn't sure about theselections she brought home. Sally wasn't convinced the items were ageappropriate or a good fit her mother’s body type.

I vote for anyone over 80 years old to year whatever makeyou happy, feel good and allows you to do your thing! Ok, that may be a littlerash....let me retract that statement. This probably would not includepretending you are something you’re not, like a Lady Gaga wanna be or Diane VonFuerstenberg's illegitimate sister. Lady Gaga's platform shoes and squishedtoes make my own tears well up in pain and just imagine my body at 80 in a wrapdress with my breasts and belly meeting as one, other than at my waist. I'mjust sayin.....

Back to Betty and her wardrobe. Betty had requested herdaughter be a part of the closet consult, so she may take pictures and notes,as needed. As I approached Betty's front door, I was greeted by Sally and thenBetty, and received a warm welcome from both. I just knew this would be awonderful afternoon!

I took a few minutes to get caught up on a few crucialthings about Betty’s current lifestyle and comfort needs, and then I plunged inwith my routine. I had a few questions for both the ladies before going throughthe racks that lined the dining room and perused the table filled with heraccessories. To say the least, Betty had a very healthy wardrobe! Somewhatdifferent than most of my younger clients, and I still needed key information:

What were Betty's lifestyle clothing needs? Dailycasual, church or any special events?
Was Betty more comfortable in pants, skirts ordresses?
Did Betty have any restrictions on buttoning a blouse,zipping a pant or reaching over her head?
Were there certain fabrics that were more comfortableto her and others that she did not prefer?

Soon after our discussion, we proceeded with trying on manyof the items she had recently purchased to check for fit and color. Bettywanted a few tops that were different than what she owned, but wasn't surewhether the trendy top was something she could actually manage. After carefulconsideration we found a few that were versatile enough in look and fit tospice up her existing wardrobe.

We moved on to mixing and matching tops, jackets,sweaters and pants with her vast array of jewelry. Betty sat on a sturdy diningroom chair between changes and would pop out of the chair to peek in the mirrorafter being put together. Outfit after outfit I coordinated with her favoritejeans and pants. It was truly a delightful experience for the three of us.Betty was thrilled with having so many options. Sally was relieved to know thather mother wouldn't stress over not knowing what to put together. I personallywas so grateful to be able to connect with a client at this stage in her lifeand see how well she was doing. It was very bittersweet for me.

Sally was a wonderful nurturing daughter and Betty was sograteful for her daughter’s help. I felt their love and respect for oneanother. Of course, for any of you who really know me, I had tearful moments ofremembering my relationship with my own grandmother. Betty did remarkably well andafter a little catching up on one another's lives with our children, I was outthe door. I'm just saying that was a consult I won't forget anytime soon.

Here are just a few tips to keep in mind if you areelderly and shopping for yourself, or shopping for an elderly relative for agift giving occasion:

1. Check with the caregiver or mate as they will probablyhave a good read on the senior’s requirements or limitations, as well as theirlikes and dislikes.

2. When purchasing bed clothing, avoid purchasing itemswith buttons and that are floor length. Buttons are difficult to manipulate (snapsare easier) and long gowns and robes may get tied up or cause the senior totrip when getting into or out of bed.

3. Make sure all garments have a wide neck to slide easilyover the head.

4. Remember to buy fabrics that can be washed frequentlyand will hold up, like cotton or fleece.

5. Purchase rubber soled shoes to prevent slipping orstumbling.

Lastly, buy happy prints and color. It is amazing howgreat people look, regardless of their age, when wearing colors other than white,beige, brown or black!

Jeans For Men

I think I have mentioned that I started this boot camptraining two days a week about two months ago. I really like the format, ormaybe because it kicks my butt, I enjoy the challenge. The group is made up ofmen and women of various sizes and shapes and I never know which of our regular5 is going to show up, as people ebb and flow into the group.

Today’s group consisted of three women and one man. Onegroup member, Todd, comes to really work out and seems quite focused. I, too,like to think I am focused, but then again for most that know me, I am easilydistracted by the topic of fashion. Today, Todd came in and mentioned that hewent jeans shopping at Crabtree Valley Mall on Saturday, spent an hour and halflooking for jeans, and still came up with nothing.

I giggled under my breath and said you should have textedme and I would have sent you to look for a certain brand and told you thestores that carry it. He agreed he should have, but then again, I wouldn't haveexpected him to do that. His wife might have said "what are you doing withSuzanne's number in your cell phone.” LOL

Let me digress for a moment. I saw my son Scott forbrunch this past Sunday and he was wearing a pair of jeans that didn't looklike something I had picked out during one of our infrequent shopping trips.Could my adult son actually pick out rocking jeans on his own? Or was this atrip to the mall with another woman possibly? Anyways, as my mind began toswirl, I regained my composure and asked where he got the jeans. He stated megot them at Lucky. As in a Lucky Brand jeans store? Hooray for Scott for maybepurchasing without his mother, and yes, cool jeans!

Back to Todd. Todd went on to talk about his challenge offinding jeans that were not over the top expensive and appropriate for a 40year old (like 40 is old). You can imagine where the conversation went fromthere. Here Todd was with 4 women, including the trainer, listening to usdiscuss the merits of men’s jeans. Stylist or not, everyone had an opinion,including Todd, who was obviously exhausted by the whole jean shoppingexperience.

He did try Express for Men, which I would expect to becut for a younger guy. Macy's had their jeans arranged according to brand,which for a guy may be a challenge within itself. Most people do not want tohave to go to more than one area in a store to find what they are looking for -imagine that! Todd also wanted jeans that would earn the respect of others andnot feel or look generic in style, but without the high price tag. Todd wasdirected by this esteemed group of women to Belk Men’s store at Crabtree andthen directly to Southpoint Mall that has a Lucky store. Let me just say, thiswhole conversation was all during our warm up. If you think any of us,including Todd, can train, talk and breathe at the same time, you are sadlymistaken. It’s bootcamp, people, and not for the faint of heart!

So, this is dedicated to all men over 35 years old thatstill want to show a little swagger and need some tips on what to look for whenbuying jeans:

1. Considerwhen you will be wearing them. Will it be for work or just for casual wear?

2. Will youwear these jeans with sneakers, boots, or dress shoes?

3. Whatcolor is the best for your wardrobe needs? Lighter denim is considered morecasual and darker is dressier in look. Keep in mind that funky washes ordistressing of a jean is never timeless in style.

4. Straight leg, skinny jeans or boot cut? Skinny jeansfor men is a tough look to wear successfully unless you’re in a rock and rollband, so the choices are really straight leg or boot cut.

5. Make surethe jeans are fitted in the waist and not baggy, as jeans do stretch. If youplan to wear a belt, be sure and try it on with a belt to avoid unnecessaryscrunching of excess fabric. Or plan to have your jeans tailored.

6. Try sitting down, wearing the jeans, to test comfort.Make sure you have room in the front of your jeans in the crotch area.

7. Bring along a spouse, girlfriend or anyone who will behonest with the look and the style you have chosen. If you wonder if you lookridiculous, you probably do.

A final tip. Don't expect the first pair of jeans you tryon to fit. It doesn't work like that. Women may try on upwards of a dozen pairsbefore satisfied, so hunker down and plan to try at least three to five pairs.No two jeans are alike, even in the same brand and size!

My own little high...

Maybe instead of being a wardrobe consultant/fashionguru/stylist, I was meant to be an ambassador of good will for clothing style.Wait a minute, that’s what I do! I love watching people emerge from a fittingroom and either have that aha moment of looking great in what they are wearingor the look of eeek! not so good.

Last night was no different. About two months ago I beganworking out with Kris Jackson, who conducts group boot camp training out of herbasement and the back yard. She is as diligent about her work outs as she isabout her diet. I love Kris for both those reasons. For me, it has proven to bejust the kick in the butt I needed to get rid of the some of the belly fat Ihave been storing for about two years. I wanna say it was menopause, buthonestly it was living the good life of baked brie and wine on summer weekends.

Oh yes, back to last night. One of Kris's clients is SarahLyntvineko, co-owner with her husband Victor of Raleigh Denim and the Curatorydowntown. Kris thought it would be great to offer her clients an opportunity tocheck out Sarah's store and for me to help by offer styling tips to clients inat an early evening party. So, if you know a store you want to have schedule aprivate party at, give me a call and/or speak with the owner or manager. Ithappens a lot more than people think. Back to last night - it was just that, aparty. Very low-key, no-pressure jean fittings and fashion advice.

Women were trying jeans and I was styling them with shoesfrom Main and Taylor and jewelry from Christine Jones Jewelry. Raleigh Denimoffers premium jeans for men and women. I was loving the deep teal blue andspruce wash jeans. Both are versatile and wonderful in color. Raleigh Denimalso offered earlier this year a white jean with a black dye component on theinside that gave the jeans a white/gray faded tone. It was a great colorcombination that provided a unique option for people not wanting to do thestark white. Since I am all about wearing white all year long, this would be aneasy option for those that are still suspect of this ‘white’ trend.

One after another, women emerged from the fitting room inall shapes and sizes, modeling jeans of various styles, including a newerhigh-waisted look. Not like the look Jessica Simpson made the news for, but asleeker, more modern high waist. For women that are short waisted not so good,but for those who were petite in height or tall, the look was really nice andflattering. It was amazing how it elongated their legs. Then again, seeing Sarahin her high-waisted jeans and rocking 5 inch spruce green suede heels made usall salivate. Her genes, believe me, are not the norm.

Many people wonder if price matters. I loved seeing how apremium jean versus a Gap or Levi's jeans sit on a woman's body. I have alwayssaid you get what you pay for. Then again, most people can't afford or justifya pair of jeans for over $200. And I’m not knocking the Gap or Levi’s - they’vebeen in business a long time, and make great jeans, it’s just that there’ssomething about a pair of premium jeans that makes it worth the money.

One of the many styling questions that I got last nightwas what type of boot to wear with what jeans. Do I do black belts and boots,or brown belts and boots? Either works, and it’s a matter of preference. Brownis a little softer and tends to blend versus black is more sharp in contrast.

I also talked about gold and silver jewelry andaccessories. One of the things I like most that Christine Jones has done moreand more of this season, is combining chains that are in several finishes. Sheoften combines one or more of gold, silver, pewter and copper. Most people canwear both gold and silver, but often choose just one to incorporate into theirwardrobe. Stepping out of that comfort zone is often hard, but that isfrequently what I try to get clients to do. There’s nothing more freeing thantrying something new and discovering that, if you like it, your wardrobe hasjust expanded itself without a single additional purchase!

Last night I spoke to several women about buying one keyitem a season that may be slightly different from what they gravitate towards.Items from the Curatory gave women a chance to do just that, with manydifferent looks, including a beautiful black wool coat with a front buttons andback full zipper. Truly stunning! There were also several tops that were shortin the top and longer in the back. Now....let me just say, that look is not foreveryone. And it may not be appropriate in a corporate setting, but certainlygreat for a night out.

What I enjoyed most last night was the relaxed buzz of theroom. It was a smaller space, filled with women bonding over jeans! Imaginethat. Then again, John the expert employee who runs the shop, was quite mellowhimself. I had to giggle when one gal came out in a plunging deep v-neck topfully exposing her cleavage and the top of her bra. I had to comment that Iexpected John has never seen a breast, to which he replied "never"and slyly grinned. One of those moments that’s like asking him if he’s everencountered a woman that hates to shop for jeans.

As the evening wound down and I packed up, the proverbialicing on the cake was when someone asked about my skin in a complimentary ‘whatproducts do you use’ kind of way. I mentioned the new product line I was using,Rodan and Fields. Of course, she asked my age and I actually told her my age.In my mind I will be 29 or maybe 39 forever. Ahhhhh.........what a fun night!

Goodfor North Hills! Kane Realty must be doing something right because they justsnagged another well-known small chain to move into North Hills, and I thinkit’s a great fit. J.McLaughlin has plunked down a small store next to FrancisKing Stationary, and near one of my favorite eatery's, Vivace. Good for bothKane Realty and brothers Jay and Kevin McLaughlin for realizing North Hills inRaleigh would be a perfect market for them.

Withthe recent announcement of the closing of Tyler House (one of my personalfavorites for clients), I really began to look to see who could fill the gap.No, I am not going on the record to say that this new store will do that, butit is sure good to have them here. I have already stumbled in and met themanager, the lovely Erin Wallace, and her few sales associates. I remembered Ihad been to another store in Florida with my mother this past spring, and mymother mentioned she had gotten some her favorite sweaters at the store.

So,I began eyeballing the racks and then proceeded to gently rifle through to seeif there was something I could potentially buy for clients. Let's start withthe quality....yes, I mean, yes, and yes again. I am not seeing made in China.The colors and patterns are bright and often something I had to squint at. Ilove me some bright, but I am not seeing how orange and yellow will translatefor fall here. Blue and yellow maybe but in a belt buckle pattern, I am justsaying. The black, browns and grays in the spandex henley seemed most on themark.

Myfavorite item by far was a chocolate suede skirt with a flattering waist andbody style. It was mine for the taking, as I knew my client would be thrilled.I continued to make my way through the store, and I noticed that they carry atleast four different body styles of dress. The wrap, the a-line pullover, theclassic shirt dress, and one called the Panama. I'm liking that there is astyle to fit most every body type, but tall women beware, it may not be foryou.

The sweaters also grabbed my attention for both men and women. Again,the attention to detail and the quality was wonderful. I also got the feelingof what I often see some other boutiques stores do. Only put out X amount ofsizes and styles and keep the rest in the stockroom. I hope that doesn't end upbeing the case, because I think most shoppers don't think to ask if their sizeisn't there. I know space is sometimes an issue, but there are a lot ofshoppers that don’t think to, or simply won’t ask for a larger size.

Moving on to accessories…I am all about a nice leather tote. As I waschecking out with Erin, I kept glancing at a beautiful soft yellow bag. I wasalmost afraid to ask to have it taken off the high shelf above. One or twothings would happen. I would ask to see it and try it on my shoulder and tryand justify the purchase or I would squirm at the price and wait until the endof the season. Needless to say, I behaved! Other items I could have easilywrapped up and carried away were some wonderful rich colored silk and cashmerescarves, belts that would have added a touch class to any outfit that neededsome panache, and lastly, dynamite small clutches! The store does have adistinct client feel and if you haven't figured that out with this blog thanmaybe you need to go see for yourself. I expect when word is out, many shopperswill flock in droves. In the meantime, since the store manager said they aren'tbig on advertising, saunter on by and let them know I sent ya!

Power shopping at its’ best.

I often get the question where do I personally shop. Well, I shop all over the place. Sometimes in town, always when I am away. I always like to check out stores in regions other than our own. I find different areas of our country buy obviously for their weather, demographic and surrounding influences. And as you can imagine, if I am in a store looking for items for a client and see something I like, I make a mental note to go back and pick it up or I buy it.

I like a bargain like anyone else, but quality and fit is the number one priority. I don't settle for items that don't feel good or that I don't feel wow in. Just because I am tall, doesn't mean I don't have my own style challenges. I would be lying if I didn't say I don't cock my head in the dressing room and make faces in the mirror after putting a garment on. I even break out in a giggle every once in a while.

I also have specific designers I like, and I know which stories carry their lines, and they sometimes come to town for trunk shows. If you haven’t been to one, it’s a great experience and I highly recommend it.

One of my favorite designers came to town Friday, Kay Unger, just in time for my power shopping excursion. Somehow Kay’s dresses fit my body like a glove. A good glove, and her newer line is called Phoebe and is designed by her daughter. I met Kay a few years ago at the same trunk show. She is in her 60's, slim, dark hair, and full of spit and vinegar. It’s obvious that she is well seasoned and loves coming to do trunk shows - it’s a great opportunity for her to speak to the women who wear her things about what they like and what they love.

Last time we met I told her I was a stylist, and we chatted briefly as she juggled several clients. This time, I arrived at the store at 10:10, knowing if I was ever going to power shop this was the time. I had to catch a plane in two hours and I was going to be focused and try only what wowed me. I was also gonna work the friends and family discount. Good clothes (tailored well, nice fabrics) are so darn expensive, but I know I will wear one of her dresses for years.

This is what happened in the 25 minutes I was there. They wanted to introduce her to me. I said we met two years ago. "Hey, Kay,” as I extended my hand, “I am Suzanne Libfraind, stylist. I have to catch a plane but I want to try a few casual dresses, not business but a dress that can go casual as well."

Kay was wearing a v-neck ruched and gathered to one side leopard print dress. Cute, but not screaming gotta have. She pulled a muted beige and brown weave with a cowl neck. Hmmm, thoughts begin swirling. Tried it on with my cowboy boots and walk out for Kay to adjust the belt. She yanks the neckline over my shoulders, making it an off the shoulder garment and opening up my neckline - it's a wow dress! I loved the belt - a supple leather with gold framed holes and buckle. Not the usual flimsy belt that often comes with dresses. Now that is a bonus!

Of course, then I proceeded to talk business. How could I stand there and make it all about me when I have five minutes to talk shop?!? “So Kay, how is the newer line Phoebe doing?” She stated that it was doing quite well and that she found people were enjoying the everyday appeal. We chatted about my motto of lifestyle dressing and she heartily agreed. Her leopard print dress is one of her favorites this season because it is easy to toss in a bag and bundles up in a suitcase. Yes, easy care fabrics. I can't say it enough, everyone wants things that are low maintenance. Just like friendships should be, as I always say.

How refreshing it is that a designer is so personable and listens to what the customer is saying. I did giggle as she tried to get me to try several other dresses including a great looking black sweater cape that would have been a wonderful addition to any wardrobe. Very fresh and nice lines. I didn’t try it but only because I already bought something similar earlier this season.

So that was my power shopping - in less than 25 minutes at a trunk show I tried 4 dresses and chatted with Kay about what she was doing to keep up with the times and economy.

Boots.....you gotta have them.

The cold weather is finally beginning to make its’ way toour state! For many people, boots have been a year round wardrobe staple,similar to the newest trend of wearing white jeans all year. So let’s chatabout wearing and rocking boots all year round.

The style that comes to mind that I see most is cowboyboots. Case in point, this past spring when the market was flooded with rufflesand flowing floral dresses that came to mid-thigh or long ankle-length peasantskirts, both worn with cowboy boots. I must admit I saw more young women andgals in their mid twenties sporting the relaxed look. I loved it, and even sawthe return of the short denim skirt, layered strappy tees, big earrings andboots for a fun summer look. I love that shoes and now boots are season-lessand that if people see Taylor Swift wearing her boots it somehow becomes moreacceptable.

I purchased my first pair of cowboy boots back in college(just a mere 10 plus years ago) by Nine West and still have them. For those ofyou that know me or have seen me you know that the ten plus years ago is jokeand that I actually have a daughter, Kelsi, who herself is in college. No needto do the math!

So about 4 years ago I bought a pair of basic tan Frye boots. I have worn them with long skirts, leggings and long sweaters, jeans and my favorite dresses. I no longer feel like I need to wear them out West only. It is amazing that anything goes, as long as you wear them with confidence. Along that line, UGG's have made such an impact on the market for the past 6-8 years that I am at the point that all I can say is “Really?” How many times can something be reinvented?

So, if you are insistent on wearing these, here are the groundrules:

You must be no older than 13 years old and notaller than 5'3''.
You must not like or know what a valley girl is.
You may not wear any other sequins on your body(that includes scarves).
You must not try and match any other garment onyour body with the color of your sequined UGG's Pair with jeans, leggings,jeggings, short neutral one color skirts, no longer than 19 inches.
Lastly, when the sequins begins to fall off,color the bare spots in with the same color marker bought from a craft store.
Don't expect to want to wear them more than oneseason. You will tire of them. OMG, I sound like my mother! I never tire ofthings that are funky.
If you insist on buying them, then rock them outgirls!

So we have covered cowboy boots and UGG's, so far. What’snew this season?

Skinny, chunky, lace ups with rubber soles, textured orweathered with a burnout look, buckled boots, over the knee, snakeskin, fabricand all heel heights and toe boxes.

Before purchasing boots here are a few things to remember:

Brown boots can be worn with black, camel, navy,dark greens and most every color clothing.
Black boots are not a must for your wardrobe.
Think about what you will wear your boots withto determine whether you want a shoe, ankle, under your knee or above your kneeboot.
Try thinking out of the box, but remember toonly select a boot that has a comfortable foot bed and heel height that is goodfor walking. This is when comfort must meet style, no matter what the modelsare wearing on the runway. You never want your boots or shoes to send yourunning to the podiatrist.
Check the boots you have already in your closetto have them polished or re-soled. A little polish can really make an old bootlook wow!

Before I close this blog, I have to mention that thisidea came from my good friend, who loves a bargain and generally does quitewell. She has her own sense of style and I am thrilled with the ways she shopsconsignment stores looking for hidden treasures. She sent me pictures of allher boots, asking which can be worn and which should be tossed. Here are mysuggestions:

Love the short black boot- wear it with pants orjeans and a black or tweed blazer.
Ugg's - savefor bad weather but limit the use. Been there done that!
Love the tan boots with flower around the ankle.Pair them with tights of all colors and wear with dresses, skirts and leggings!

A Fond Farewell To Tyler House

So this past week one of my closest retail friends decided to call it quits and close her store. I have known Jennifer Huggard, owner of Tyler House, for about as long as I have been in business. I realize it simply wasn’t feasible for her to call all her friends and let them know, but it was a shock to read it in the mail. I was opening up my mail last Sunday after a very long ride home from Charlotte after Charlotte Fashion Week. I was so tired, and concerned that I might doze off, I made Jeannie talk business with me the whole way home. She really wanted to zone out herself and send me an email about things up and coming, and I knew the comment of how is your book coming along would be said, but for me I needed to stay awake. More coffee was really not the answer, but pushing conversation with Jeannie was. I finally get back to Raleigh and pull in around 2pm, and gather my mail out of the mailbox. I see a letter from Tyler House and realize it wasn't a bill.

“Dear Friends,
Over the past seventeen years I have had the privilege of owning Tyler House, the store where I worked while in school and first began to learn from Mr. Tyler the skills of being a good merchant. As I face the end of my lease, I have decided it is time to begin a new chapter in my life......”

Jennifer goes on to say she will be starting a sale and will begin to reduce prices to prepare to close her doors. I don't gasp or grab my chest often, but being tired, I did both and started to tear. I quickly call Jennifer to ask if she and John (her husband) are ok. She replies yes, but her aunt was not. I remembered Jennifer mentioning that her aunt was quite ill, and that they were only three years apart in age. Her aunt, who really was like a sister had been there for her own sister, Jennifer’s mother, when she was ill so many years before.

Jennifer wanted that same time with her aunt and plans to travel with her retired husband. No, it wasn't that the business wasn't doing well, it was that Jennifer wanted to trade her very hectic life to one filled with travel and family. I repeated many times how happy I was for her and glad that she had made such a wonderful choice. Most of us spend our lives working day in and day out not taking enough time to evaluate what is most important to us. I think Jennifer has it right!

For me I sat down to calculate the many losses it meant to me, as Jennifer has not only been a friend but a true supportive business confidant over the years. This is my top ten list of what I will miss most about Tyler House.

The greeting I receive from Ann Suber every time I walk in.
That Jennifer is always, and I mean always, very accommodating and will never let a client walk out unhappy.
Jennifer takes back most everything even after a month or longer. This is not Nordstrom, it is a boutique mind you!
Jennifer will always try and get a garment if requested by me for a client, even if she knows chances are slim.
The store is always clean and well dressed!
I will especially miss Tot's very southern twang and conversation
Jennifer and I know one another so well we almost have a secret code when something happens in the store that makes up both want to bust out and laugh
Jennifer knows so much about fit and body type and the merchandise she carries that I can always pick her brain.
The way Ann Suber has no problem asking a client of mine a random question that usually catches me off guard.
The back room and office has always been one of my favorite places to hang out with Jennifer and Claire, her assistant, because we can chit chat about retail locally.

In finishing this list, I realize what I will miss most about the store closing is that for me I am not sure I can fill the void of what the store carried for my clients. Jennifer has done a great job with private label. For the many people that thought she bought for the conservative client, I say not. I could always find that piece that would bring on the wow factor. So, if there are any local merchants out there, I hope you have the opportunity to hop on some of the vendors that Jennifer had relationships with and grab them quick.

I do expect to keep in touch with Jennifer and catch a lunch or dinner, but it won't be the same. Tyler House is like my favorite high heels and robe all wrapped up into one. Be sure and drop by and catch some of the great savings before she closes her doors. I sure hope that Mr. Tyler is smiling down on Jennifer because she has been gem to so many and we will long remember her when wearing our Tyler House duds!

So Charlotte Fashion Week was pretty darn terrific! If you have been following me on Twitter and Facebook, you have seen my various looks each night. I felt like a princess and loved having the opportunity to have my hair and make-up done to highlight my dress. When The Limited agreed to dress me for the event, I knew that what I chose would have to highlight each night’s events on the runway. The first night’s show, I wore the very streamlined and fitted raspberry and slate grey dress. It was rusched at the top in raspberry and fitted in the slate grey towards the bottom. Boy, was it fitted. Thank G-d for the old Spanx! The dress was perfect for an evening that highlighted local stores such as Saks OFF5th, Nitsa's Apparel, and Sada Fashions, to name a few. My hair was blown out, soft curls were put in, and a very smoky berry eye. I was perfectly dressed for the occasion. You know how easy it is to be over or underdressed!

The second evening I wore a one shoulder, aubergine dress with a twisted flower on the shoulder stopping right above my chest. I can't tell you how many people I interviewed who commented about how pretty the dress was. I was quick to mention to a designer that asked who I was wearing that it was from The Limited. The initial response was "shut up"! I laughed, realizing it was actually a compliment that many people are quick to judge a particular store by its’ history. I am going on the record to say, just as people change, stores grow and move towards what they want to be, frequently by adding an element to their strategy. The Limited has done that and I was feeling marvelous! I went with a soft eye, heavy eyeliner and a loose side bun. All I needed by the end of the night was a good foot rub from my husband. The dress, the hair and the make-up definitely held up longer that I did. The whole look once again complimented the designers, including Navy and Pearls, Tsvety Fashions, and sassy Mew Designs.

The last evening I chose a black v-neck lace neckline and softly tiered dress. The dress came with a fitted black belt with a black embellished center. Have to wear a LBD for the finale, right? I wore my hair in a high woven bun with soft green eye shadow. I loved the black tie dressier look and I was really happy with my lower heeled Stuart Weitzman pumps! The final show was highlighted by the couture designers, so it was only fitting I dress in black.

If you have to know which one was my favorite, I may be hard pressed to answer. Any or all three would be fabulous wardrobe builders! Lucky for the women that will get these donated fashions from The Limited!

Again, special thanks to The Limited. I had numerous compliments every night from both men and women about the dresses, which is a good sign, if a woman is willing to be that gracious. It would be hard for me to say that I didn't enjoy every minute of Charlotte Fashion Week. As the last runway show geared up on Saturday night, I grabbed my camera man Josh, and I proceeded to enter the VIP lounge to interview many of the guests that I hadn’t had a chance to interview during the previous nights.

As I move towards this women and her extremely tall partner, I'm thinking, ok.... he has to be an ex-basketball player. Right I am, but as I introduce myself, I realize I have come face to face with Shekina Moore of Sokina Designs, a woman I had interview two months before at the Red Carpet Fashion Lounge. She showed her line on the runway and it was huge hit! She was now sporting a pregnancy and truly glowed. Small world, but then again it was another fashion event so I shouldn't be surprised!

As the interviews progressed, I interviewed many people in the fashion industry, athletes and people that appreciated great fashion and wanted to be a part of what was coming next to a store near them. I interviewed a group of five women fully decked out in fishnet tights, boots over the knee, plunging necklines, leather and fur combinations and yes, my favorite, animal print shoes. Of course, they way they lined up and proceeded to field my questions made me stop in mid-stream to ask the obvious. Where they the designated Charlotte housewives?

I continued to move from the guests and then to the back room where the designers and make-up and hair stylists were housed. I attempted to snag just a few designers before the final line up began. I caught one or two designers and then went out to watch the show. Finished with work, and now on to the best part of the evening!

I knew that Bill Evans was going to be showing men’s smoking jackets made of upholstery weight and fine fabrics acquired throughout the world. I couldn't wait to see how they would translate to the runway, especially since many of them would be modeled by women only wearing the tights and jacket. One silk gold and black horizontal stripe didn't disappoint. The model’s hair was carefully coiffed and a burglar’s eye mask was painted on her face. Bill's smoking jackets were so well received that the audience rose to their feet in appreciation of his creativity.

Another highlight of the evening was Eleanor Morgan, a designer from Charleston, whose burnout designs trimmed with gold leaf was outstanding. The attention to detail between the underlay of fabrics from the sheer to the heavily embellished had many of the audience clapping. A note of interest is that Eleanor is a graduate from NC State School of Textile and Design.

My favorite designer of the entire week was Cory Corture. Cory's designs were truly extravagant with layers upon layers of fabric building pillows of billowing fabric. I felt as though I was seeing costumes designed for the museum of history and dress. The coordinating headwear, jackets and capes truly were breath taking. Talk about a finale!

The audience was really treated to some spectacular designs over the course of the three day event. I marveled at the local support through stores and merchants, the major sponsors, and the general public. We went from a good turnout on Thursday night to a fully packed house on Saturday night. What I did realize is how exciting this event is and the importance of highlighting up and coming designers. All it takes is one show to launch a designer who is seen by a buyer to have their goods being worn by the public!

I have to commend the crew that I know worked so hard to make this all happen. Anthony Simons, Director of Plitz Fashion Marketing Charlotte, Kayla Rose, Patricia Woo, who kept the all the models and designers on cue, Soraya Williams and Wayne Shields from Plitz Fashion Marketing NYC, and Samantha Busch, the host and the many others who made it come together. It was a wonderful production and I am so happy to have been the back of the house commentator.

Ramping it up!

Friday night’s fashions at Charlotte Fashion Week were really fabulous! I was feeling quite marvelous myself. My rolled pin curls that sat for several hours in my hair when pulled out left me with a soft and curly side bun. My make-up went from heavy smoke eyes from the day before to a neutral eye with smudged liner. Now we’re talking!

After my prompt 6 o'clock arrival, I met with Josh, my camera man for the night. So the interviews began.

Soraya Williams is as lovely in stature as she is to look at. She is the President and Chief Executive of Plitzs Fashion Marketing. I met her briefly on Thursday night right after she arrived, barely making it to see the first show. Those tricky flight arrival and departure times…..

Again, I am tall, but some of the women I have encountered the past few days are really tall and lean. Soraya works in New York and does Fashion Week with Plitz Marketing in February. This year they are doing a show pitting model against model and designer against designer. Does the theme sound familiar?

Last night also brought entertainment. The show kicked off with a special guest performance with a young woman named K-RISS and her four back up dancers. Her singing and dancing is hip hop funk and she is all about dancing to the music. She is young and fresh and has already had a seamstress and a jeweler working on her stage designs. Oh, how young they are!

Back to a few other highlights of the evening. Annelise Mann is a designer from the area and showed off her line, Navy and Pearls. She used a lot of sheer and light fabrics and nautical stripes in dresses, skirts and jackets. The garment that most impressed me was the layered white wedding dress with strands of pearls draped over the arms and across the body. Hard visual, but believe me, I was pretty spellbound. I met Annelise at the after party and asked about her inspiration. She believes in women’s empowerment and women being true to themselves and others. Strong women and strong design, but with the pearls to soften. Clever branding, huh?

One of my favorite looks was by designer Megan Waldrep from Charleston South Carolina, of MEW Designs. She did these wild abstract loose stripes of silver and woven white/clear fabric in a pant, worn with a simple tee shirt and heels, and a bolero jacket. She also did shorts. All three items were in the same fabric, but each worn separately and made a statement on their own. I was sold! If I could just rock them! Megan has the personality to match what she does. Clever, sassy and a go-getter! Megan and her best friend Emily Bargeron, a fellow designer, trade off assisting with each other’s shows.

Both women participated in Charleston Fashion week several years ago and were upset when they realized they could not partake again due to a pretty common policy of allowing designers a one time opportunity, so they decided to do their own thing. They have come up with the "unofficial " kick off fashion show for Charleston Fashion Week to raise money and awareness about autistic children by benefitting Surfer’s Healing (surfershealing.org). Professional surfers work with the children at camps around the world and teach them to surf, as the water has proven to be very therapeutic to kids suffering from autism. Who knew? This show is now professionally run and in its’ fourth year. The gals are thrilled on how it gives them an opportunity to give back to the community and show their designs. Both Jeannie and I will be traveling to Charleston to be a part of the event! No way I'm gonna do the surf board thing......but I will be watching from my beach towel under my umbrella, drinking my favorite adult beverage. AHHHH...

Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn't talk about Thomas Ruffin, the designer of T.2 Design Group. I know earlier I tweeted out that I was standing next to Usher in a picture. Well, it wasn't actually Usher, but close enough. The white jacket and pants were the designs of Thomas. The one thing that I have found most interesting is the fact that many of the designers have full time jobs and design on the side. Thomas is an elementary teacher and has been designing for years. I loved what he showcased. He had men’s jackets and shirts. Many of the items came out in a similar form for women, and he had a really cohesive line for the show. My absolute favorite item was a dress with a sweetheart neckline, fitted waist and tiered bottom with lots of movement. It was so soft and feminine, but also made me want to go salsa dancing. We better talk to my husband about that. He has seen my two left feet. Anyway, I found myself cheering for Thomas and enjoyed seeing his wares on the runway as much as I enjoyed interviewing and chatting with the camera man he brought down.

A final shout out to Tvsety McAuliffe. Stunning fabrics and some beautiful dresses. I expect we will see much more of her to come. A Bulgarian native, she has a stunning view of fashion, a clearly defined line, and a beautiful aesthetic.

Another wonderful evening, but switching to lower heels for Saturday. My dogs are barking! I even had one security guard ask me how many laps I do a night, in and out of the designers cave, watching the frenzy of it all unfold before me!

Kicking it off with cute kids!

Last night’s start of Charlotte Fashion Week was with a Gap Kids Fashion Show. Samantha Busch came up on the stage and gave her introductions to get the show going.

Let me back up to the afternoon, though, since there is a lot of work that goes into a fashion show for everyone (including the kids). So, as I have mentioned dozens of times, The Limited sponsored my duds for all three nights, which was really great since I got to see all their new stuff when I did their grand opening at Streets of Southpoint. Sometime mid-afternoon I tromped up the hill a few blocks with my tight bad-ass jeans on and my signed Vince Camuto shoe boots. I was feeling pretty shee-shee to go and get my hair and make-up done by the beauty stylist assigned to me (who was also doing the models for the show).

Met with the lead make-up artist, Shari, and showed her my dress. We discussed a smoky eye. Thursday I rolled into Bobbi Brown at Crabtree Mall where I met a regional representative who did a fabulous job on my smoky eye for Wednesday night’s charity event. Shari was great, but I was slightly concerned that I look like someone slugged me and my eye was purple. Nothing that couldn't be toned down, right?

Marissa was very young but she did do a good job with the old locks, after all. A little curl here and there, and something that would hold all night. I said I was easy to style, but I definitely have my own thoughts about my hair and make-up. Hey, it only took me 25 years to realize I look better as a brunette and not a blond.

I did feel pretty great in my outfit though. I could definitely hold my own against those models. Not! LOL

Back to Gap Kids and the start of the show. I’d watched the kids while I was getting hair and make-up done, and I knew they’d have a long day, so I was curious to watch them on the runway. The show kicked off with the first young model, Marissa, who I interviewed the night before at the charity event. Sassy at 6 is amazing! The fashions and models were fabulous. It quickly brought me back to when my kids were young and dressing from Gap Kids. Lots of play on layering, mixture of patterns, leggings, jackets and jeans, and even Hello Kitty tees with glitter came into view. The kids stole the show, some with their swagger, blowing of kisses, waves to the crowd and hip jerking movements. The crowd ate it up and my heart melted. I expect it will be a while before I am dressing grandkids.

During the evening before the show and in between sets, I had a microphone and an opportunity to interview many people. A few of the highlights that come to mind was a woman who was there to photograph the event. Mia was quite a beauty herself and she had this sassy haircut and great big oversized gold hoop earrings. I love it when women wear things so confidently.

I also interviewed two men, John and Jacque. John looked quite dapper in his candy apple, red and white striped shirt with French cuffs and aviator sunglasses. His buddy Jacque, whose profession I didn't catch or he didn't mention, was the guy who had it going on. He had on a three piece denim suit stitched back in gold. His pants were baggy, the vest fitted and the jacket more of a duster. It was his creation and only he could probably carry it off without looking like a gangster. It was a fantastic look for him, and definitely eye-catching in the front row.

I also met and chatted with another local stylist. Ryan is doing his thing with clients and looked quite rocking with his navy and white spotted shirt and soft pink tie and pocket square. Personally, I would have thrown in a paisley pocket square and called it a day! Can’t wait to see what he’s wearing tonight….

Some of the other highlights of the evening were a young woman by the name of Alexis Scott with a line by the name of Sada. Her design inspiration has been her mother and she doesn't have a particular look she is going after. She showed diverse looks, including a high-waisted pencil skirt and short bolero style, fitted short sleeve jacket, and sheer camel shirt. The fabric of the jacket and skirt was similar to Burberry’s signature plaid design. I also really liked her creative use of men’s neckwear in a red tie worn with a Peter Pan collar.

The show stopper of the evening was Stephanie Teague, designer of the eco line Pretty Birdie. She designs and uses all eco-friendly sustainable and recycled fabrics. She sells now on Etsy and designs and sews all her designs by hand herself. Her designs are all very wearable, with comfort and creativity all rolled up into one. Even the very simple cotton a-line, v-neck flowered dress was fabulous. As the model turned the corner, I saw this very easy dress instantly appear chic with a low back come into view. The elbow length, moss-colored, full neck sweater could easily be worn alone with jeans or leggings, layered with a blouse, or over a dress. Simple chic was what Stephanie showed and the crowd ate it up.

Last night was just the beginning of what I expect to be a fabulous next couple of days. The venue couldn't be better as well. The Epicenter in downtown Charlotte has an upper floor patio area complete with a stage and bar. As I continue to reflect on last night’s event while sucking down my Starbucks, I get chills just thinking about what tonight might bring. Hmmm, I know I am excited, but then again maybe it is the room’s air conditioning that is causing me to shiver. Gotta run and head to hair and make-up once again....

Tonight I am wearing my one shoulder aubergine dress from The Limited.......ahhhh…..

Hi ho, hi ho, off to Charlotte Fashion Week we go!

Yesterday I headed out from Raleigh with my partner in crime, Jeannie. Getting to Charlotte for fashion week was an exciting trip - with the torrential rains that made the two and a half hour ride a very long three hour ride and limited munchies of only pistachios and a bottle of water, we fought the rains, crazy drivers and what seemed to be endless construction.

On the way we decided to stay local instead of braving the roads and weather to get back. Booked on Priceline on the way - thankfully they have an app for that! Arriving at the hotel and quickly trying to change into formal attire to attend the fundraiser kick-off reception was no easy feat, either. My dress, which I had only worn only one other time at another fundraiser, was not working. Stylist malfunction - OMG.

The dress offers about 6 different ways to be worn, wrapping the long front panels around my body. I prayed for no wardrobe malfunction during the event and made Jeannie promise she would keep an eye out to make sure that didn't happen. Luckily, our hotel was only three blocks from the event. Finally, we made it up to the 7th floor private party of the hotel where I was greeted by Anthony Simon, the executive director of Charlotte Fashion Week. I was immediately whisked away and handed a microphone.

Samantha Busch

My fist interview was Samantha Bush, the host of the event. What a cute young thing. She’s really sweet and a little nervous about the new and exciting opportunity ahead of her. As we chatted, I made her feel at ease by talking about things she was most comfortable speaking about. Fitness and shoes - two of my favorite topics! On to what was almost a blur of interviews.

Troy Pelshak

I met Troy Pelshak, who played football for the St. Louis Rams. Troy was the guest speaker for the evening benefitting the American Cancer Society. He spoke of the loss of his father to cancer within three months of being diagnosed. He is a very eloquent speaker and you could tell he really cares about defeating cancer. Besides his moving words to the crowd gathered for the fundraiser, I could not take my eyes off the fabulous mandarin color embroidered shirt he wore. Custom made, no doubt!

Lots of fabulous fashion going on, too. Women in all sorts of dresses - short and long, loose, fitted and more fitted, as well as a few I would not dare to comment on. I met two young women who were wearing one designer’s gowns, too. The designer couldn’t be there, but the girls were busy showing off her style.

I saw quite a bit of animal print in all shapes and forms including a shoe boot, a hat, and dress. Animal print for some reason makes me want to growl! The cutest interview was with a six year old who will be modeling in tonight’s fashion show for GapKids, and she was wearing a great animal print. A girl after my own heart! She is already a fashionista in the making and with her smile and big brown eyes, I just wanted to warn the mother to hold onto her hat. I expect to see this little fashionista on many more runways!

Wayne Shields

As the evening wound down, I tried to step back and take it all in. I met dozens of people - designers, Anthony's partner Wayne Shields from Plitzs Fashion Marketing, NFL players (Natrone Means!), models, another stylist from Charlotte and yes, the DJ's assistant wanting to meet a stylist. Ask me how much I slept last night? Between Jeannie sounding like a snuffleupagus and thinking about the nights events, it wasn't much.

Gotta run - off to get my hair and make-up done for tonight’s first fashion show. Is this fun or what?!?

Thursday was all about working on the photography portionof my new website. All I know is that I really can't stand the mug that isbeing shown presently on my FaceBook account and I am eager to get that womanwho I think is me in that designer starched white blouse off the screen.Imagine that, a stylist disliking her own pictures. I wish you all had a littlecamera into my world last night, as I often remind myself that I shop alwaysfor me last. Clients first, and then, if I am lucky to leave town for a briefstint, I like to shop.

Wednesday night I proceeded to go through my wardrobepulling out things that would potentially photograph well and highlight my newdark hair and bright hazel eyes. A closet consultation for me, really. I tookabout 7 dresses to my one of my favorite jewelers and good friend, ChristineJones. It is not like I don't have a nice collection of accessories, but thenagain why not see what Chris might have. That's what good friends are for,right?

After an hour of talking business and some other choicetopics, I load my arms back up and leave with what many might say a doggy bagor a good bag of earrings and necklaces. I can't wait until her daughter startswearing her mother’s jewelry! I choose 3 outfits for my photo shoot. Thesepictures will hopefully cover any pictures needed for the next couple of years,provided I don't go back to blond (no way, Jose!) or get a face lift. No toboth, I love my wrinkles.

Back to my outfits. I chose a red dress that yes, I haveto admit, has been waiting for the right occasion and the right body. Sinceneither has come of late, I realize it’s now or never! The little black dresswas adorned by a rather large necklace of green and silver. Are you getting thevisual? Lastly, I did a deep purple blouse and a black skirt for my"official" business look. I had all my bases covered and I truckedover to my new best friend’s photography studio. Let me just say this. After agrueling hour and a half you want your photographer to help you work that lens.And I mean work it! For the next 10 days Glen Parson is going to be my bestfriend. He shot me Thursday, he shot me Friday with my dog and a few clientsfor my website, and next week for Charlotte Fashion Week. He, along with mypartner-in-crime Jeannie, is going to move me and photograph me with everydesigner, hair stylist, make-up artist, and star wanna-be for the event. So, itis all about Glen!

The second half of my day was equally as exciting. TheLimited has graciously offered to sponsor my outfits for Charlotte FashionWeek. I trucked to Crabtree and went through the box that was sent fromcorporate. I love the three outfits I chose along with the fun acceccories. Itis important for me to not be the belle of the ball, because it should be all aboutthe people I will be interviewing. Let me just say, as Jeannie reminds meoften, ‘Suzanne it isn't always about you.’ LOL. The manager Emily and herassistant were great. I only had an hour and I am all about making it happen.The clothes I chose for Charlotte Fashion Week from The Limited will be donatedto charity when I am done. How wonderful is that! Can't wait to get on therunway and meet all the models and the host, Samantha Busch. I will be theon-site host which will include me flying by the seat of my dress to whereverthe action is. You gotta love it! Free consult and $200 to spend at Macy's! This past Wednesday I met with Nancy Miller, the winner of the "Wheels for Samantha" gift certificate donated by myself and Macy's for her mini shopping spree. What to spend the $200 on? Hmm....how do you begin to decide? Well, for me it would be a no-brainer. It is not going to be housewares, make up, perfume, or lingerie.

I frequently talk about lifestyle dressing. So, as I sat down with Nancy Miller, that’s what we began to talk about. What is her everyday lifestyle like? Here are a few things to think about before shopping:

•    Do you work outside the home and, if so, what is the atmosphere?
•    What do you usually do nights and weekends?
•    Do you like easy care fabrics and will you buy items that need dry cleaning?
•    Do you prefer pants, skirts or dresses?
•    Heels or flats or maybe boots for fall?
•    What is your biggest fashion challenge?

So game on! Nancy has a very casual lifestyle, and works in an office that is very business casual. No jeans are allowed, with the exception of colored jeans, and the office is generally chilly. Nancy mentioned that she would love a pair of jeans. Great, because I love that Macy's carries about 10 different lines from Tommy Hilfiger, Lucky, Calvin Klein, to their own private brand, Style and Co, just to name a few. It was time to man up!

As we buzzed around the ladies department, we picked up about 8 pairs of jeans, several tops, and a wonderful brush cotton suede teal jacket. When trying on jeans you just gotta got for it. Most brands today actually have a tag that will tell you what the fit will be. An example is the tag description ‘sits below natural waist with flare leg’. Can't get better than that! Here are tips for trying on jeans:

•    Sizes, along with fit, will vary so don't get discouraged about a size
•    Dark washes are always more flattering
•    If you have a larger caboose, avoid back pockets and any details
•    Boot cut or flair leg style jeans helps elongate the legs
•    Lastly, make sure the jean has spandex and lycra for a more comfortable stretch fit

The shopping spree was a hit! Nancy rocked her new jeans, along with a few great tops and her lovely teal jacket. As we headed off to get a pair of boots with her remaining $75 dollars, we both cheered knowing what great values she got. The trick to smart shopping is to take time to evaluate what you need and then start hunting. Buy what you need and not what you want. Prioritize your needs and if you don't find it then go elsewhere!

Another day in my life as a stylist.....still having too much fun....

So, I have one client that I have worked with for so long that the way we banter back and forth it’s like we’re siblings. I really get a kick out of her and we laugh about some of the random things that often come up in our everyday lives. She is quite petite and very physically fit. When she tries on clothes and comments on her fat, sagging skin (there is absolutely none) or aging face, I usually roll my eyes and answer with a smart comment. I mean, really! Over the years she has gone from business suits and dresses, to very business casual, to jeans and boots.

The best thing about having a client for years is that you know their inner sense of style, and can not only stroll down memory lane with them, but you can adjust to the changes in lifestyle that cause changes in the way your client dresses without struggling to figure out what the style should be. I remember the days of purchasing killer high heel shoes and structured suits for her. From there we have moved into dresses, mainly cotton, a few lower heels, and a slew of boots, from Western to dress. We also went through a belt and scarf phase and some great costume jewelry.

Regardless of how she has evolved with her wardrobe and the changing roles in her career, we have always had fun doing it. Today’s adventure was no different. Her new dog Molly greets me at the door and proceeded to lick every inch of my legs! Ugh! My old dog Skip to My Loo (yes, that really is her name) is always looking at me strangely when I return home from a day’s work, eyeing me as if I am a traitor and sniffing around me. After 13 years Skip still thinks it is necessary to throw guilt my way.....

One thing I have learned at client’s homes is to ask after meeting their pets for the first time, where the dog treats are. I'm no fool, and if I can race to a client’s kitchen and snatch a treat to feed to the pet, I will save myself and my legs from getting an additional bath from a tongue that has been g-d only knows where. Yuck.

After the brief closet consult (my client cleans out mostly on her own now), I rummage through the pile and take what she isn't going to wear to bring to consignment. There are usually a few items with price tags in the pile, so I try to encourage her to keep the item and wear it. We now catalog items in a few categories:

•    BS (before Suzanne)
•    PBS (picked by Suzanne) and lastly,
•    PBC (picked by client).

I tend to argue when items are consigned and discarded with tags that clearly have been labeled by PBS! Not on my watch, and why aren't you wearing that? Because we know one another so well, we tend not to discuss it for too long. She may give in but then I may find it next season still with its’ tags on it.

So the point of all this is.....buy only what you will wear and never, and I mean never, buy out of guilt or thinking that maybe someday you will wear it and warm up to it. You just won’t.

As I mentioned earlier, my client wanted just a few things to spruce up her wardrobe for the upcoming season (fall/holiday/winter/whatever). It usually starts with dresses. So we traveled to Stephanie's in Rocky Mount. For many of you scratching your head, yes, I did say Rocky Mount, despite the wonderful shopping in the Triangle. Rocky Mount is the hidden little treasure that has some great, well priced lines, in a store called Stephanie’s.

Starting from Wake Forest and using my GPS was something else, though. We were guided on every back road possible before finally connecting with 64 West. Not only did we see where most farmers in Franklin County are selling their fruits and vegetables this season, but also I now fully understand Dollar General’s target market. After 29 miles of driving, we decided we were in dire need of a Starbucks. The GPS was at it again, but this time we realized it was probably located in the local Target. It was a small town, and, ok, so what if I was getting quite a few stares from the locals. Not good stares, either. Here I am in my heels towering over 5'10 maybe ‘11 in a slightly, and I mean ever so slightly, trendy outfit (this outfit probably wouldn't get a designer to even look up) and my petite, maybe 5' client in her t-shirt, torn jeans and flip flops. Talk about not judging a book by its’ cover.

The Starbucks employee didn't seem to like my fully doctored coffee order or perky tone, either. I think she was having a Monday, and wishing it was Friday - we’ve all had those days, right? On we went to Stephanie's. Did I mention that I was in a loaner car and that the empty gas light was illuminated? First gas station I pulled into obviously had pumps. I didn't see a charge card space so I trotted into the shop with my $10 to put in the tank. The man came around from the back office and I said I will take $10 on pump one. He said " Lady, I haven't had gas here since 2009." Was I in a time warp or did this station actually have pumps but no gas? A gas station, I guess not, but what then? We still had no gas. My client laughed so hard, I thought she was going to spit up her frozen Starbucks concoction. Rest assured, we did find a gas station with pumps and actual gas.

Finally arriving at Stephanie's we find a few great tops, a pair of jeans and yes......drum roll, please. Sweater jackets appropriate for the dozen dresses she has in her closet to help her transition her clothes from summer to fall. I have been on the search for just this thing for years! Feeling triumphant, we drive back to Raleigh, avoiding the back roads from our earlier ride. From Zebulon to Knightdale we see the skies darken and in a distance, torrential rain ahead. What we were about to drive into was gonna be ugly. Ugly it was, and yes, I worried about being in a loaner car that I was concerned didn't handle as well as my own. We did make it back safely, if more slowly than the trip out.

So, all is well that ends well. Best part of my day was two-fold. Finding the unexpected surprise of sweater jackets that we having been hunting for years and my old dog Skip didn't catch on to that Molly had been licking me legs! Whew, now that’s what I'm talking about!

What a glorious day to go shopping, checking out fall goods and yes, I have to admit, I had a motive to be hitting the stores. I was pre-shopping for a client who has beautiful hand painted and wonderfully woven scarves that needed some simple tops to highlight the beauty of the accessories. After a grueling 3.5 hour meeting with my marketing person, I was primed and excited to stretch my legs and start shopping. Ever had that fist pumping kind of excitement, wondering what you might find, and really excited to find out what it is? So what if I am a little over the top when it comes to looking at clothing.

By the way, have I mentioned that I am having my website redone and totally updated to better match what Wardrobe Consulting is doing these days? I have decided to pursue a whole new color scheme of navy and camel. My WC logo is about to be shelved, as well. Now look, it has been wonderful for the past almost 20 years, but don't you think it is time to hang it up and do as I always tell my clients? Update, update, update….everyone needs an update at least every decade if not sooner. Now, I'm obviously talking about clothes .....

Cruised by Galatea today to see what possibilities they had for my client. Susan, the store manager, is great about highlighting new items. Check out the trunk show they have coming up, should be quite cool! Local designer and his first trunk show - should be a great opportunity to buy stuff no one else has!

 Galatea Boutique is hosting the trunk show on Saturday, Sept. 10, for Tierra Ideas. Matt Mahler is a local designer who makes eco-friendly bags from inner tubes donated by Performance Bicycle and upcycled aircraft textiles donated by Delta Air Lines. Ten percent of the proceeds are donated by Tierra Ideas to Delta's chosen charitable organization, which has been the Nature Conservancy. Tierra Ideas has been featured in USA today and Diane Sawyer's "Made in America," so be sure to come meet the designer and order your sustainable, locally made bag at his first trunk show. Next, I went to Crabtree Mall and started my path at Ann Taylor, where they had a fabulous chartreuse button down sweater with a darker coppery sequin top. I saw tons of tones of greens, olives, browns and caramels - rich tones that will work with navy, stone, black and brown. I hope, if you don't have a sequin top already in your wardrobe, you try one on and see how you like it. Let me know if you have questions on how to wear sequins anything. It's easy, and not just for the holidays!

Next, I cruised on to Nine West, but not before I stopped at White House Black Market. Years ago I wondered how long that store could be profitable selling just white and black items. I think it was about five years ago that the company changed their tune and started to bring in beige and a few other colors intermittently. I saw a great three mannequin display as I cruised into the store. The middle outfit was a channel style jacket paired with a print blouse with cobalt blue and red roses. Loved the pattern mixing. The other two mannequins were more simply dressed but accessorized to the hilt. As I was snapping a picture to tweet it how much I loved it, I was stopped by a salesperson and asked if I was taking a photo to send to a friend. I mentioned that I was a stylist and I wanted to tweet the picture out. She proceeded to tell me it was against company policy and that I couldn't take a picture. I was so stunned I just replied, “Really?” She reiterated it again, so I did a quick sweep for what I was hunting for and left the store. Not without snapping a picture of their windows on the way out. If anyone, and I mean anyone, gets that store policy, please explain it to me, ‘cuz I really need a proper explanation. This world is all about doing the social media thing right?

Next stop, the Nine West store. I was still foaming at the mouth at what had just happened at White House Black Market, so this time I asked if I could take a snap. The store manager was so friendly and thrilled that I wanted to take a picture, she even helped me figure out how to eliminate pictures on my Driod to make room for the pictures I wanted to take. This is when my family would be rolling their eyes at my lack of understanding of my cell phone. Check out this hot looking blue, black and brown python and the matching bag. Now that is a killer shoe. She offered to let me try it and we had further dialogue about a pair of black sequin boots that I enquired about. Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

All in all, it was great being out in the stores and seeing what fall fashions have begun to make their way to the front of the stores. Don't forget this weekend is going to be a killer weekend for all last ditch efforts for great buys on summer items. Shop the stores with nothing in mind and I expect you will find at least one treasure, if not a few!

P.S. Again, if anyone knows about White House Black Market’s crazy policy I would love to hear a further explanation. You'd think that after 20 plus years in retail I would have seen and heard everything!

The Limited - Fashion Show & Gift Certificate Winners.

The fashion show celebrating The Limited’s grand opening at The Streets of Southpoint in Durham was fantastic, and I was thrilled to be a part of it all. When I tell you there were crowds of people, it would be an understatement. The fashion show was held in center court with over 100 chairs for VIP seating, and standing room only behind the chairs for the crowds gathered and above on the second floor looking down.

Linda Loveland, morning DJ for MIX 101.5, came out in her red sheath dress and made the introductions. I giggled when she announced that the sheath dress she was wearing was her first ever owned. Truth be told, Linda could put on a paper bag and it would still look great. She has the longest, loveliest legs I’ve seen in a long time and she ain't 29 no more, but looks amazing!

Elliot Staples, the Senior Vice President of Design at The Limited, soon came out to get the show going. He started with 8 items on a rolling rack ranging from pants, skirts, tops, a sweater and a fabulous sage green, pleather bomber jacket. The first series of models strutted the runway in the various combinations from the eight garments shown on the rack earlier. The models were all employees from the store, which to my delight proved the versatility of clothing for women of all shapes and sizes.

As the next several segments followed, we were introduced to camel as the key color with a touch of tartan plaid in a fabulous cape, skirt and coat. All the camel garments shown were paired with combinations of navy (Elliot's favorite combination), blacks, browns, greys, and reds! Personally, I think the accessories - belts, scarves, handbags and shoes - made all the outfits winners!

We also witnessed another trend of color block clothing. On a side note, I found color block items this past spring to be a little too challenging for the average consumer to wear, but The Limited carries color block pieces my grandmother could have pulled off. As the crowds cheered, Elliot introduced one last group of models. The group was comprised of local college student volunteers and employees from the local Ronald MacDonald House, who The Limited had partnered with for the event. A percentage of the store sales profits throughout the weekend were donated to Ronald MacDonald House. So, fashion meets fundraising!

It really was a wonderful fashion event and the people that registered for the show and were given a wristband, they were about to experience truly getting the most bang for your buck! At the private VIP party, not only did the wine and desserts flow, but all clothes in the store where 50% off. Check out the black and red pleather jacket that had my name on it!

For my two luck winners, Beth Palmer and Chris Jones, they were armed with their $50 gift card in hand as they attempted to shop along with the maze of crowds in the store. As the DJ provided shopping music, I searched for Beth Palmer, looking forward to helping her choose items to wear back with a black pair of pants that she was wearing. Beth is a breast cancer survivor, first diagnosed in 2003 and she is a talented artist - worth checking out her website at www.bethpalmerstudio.com, too.

By the time I found Beth she was in the register line holding a color block cardigan of red and camel, a muted stripe black and navy sweater, and a grey jacket. She had done quite well (clearly she’s listened to me over the years), but I quickly mentioned that the cardigan would really pop with a white shirt or blouse worn underneath and anything in a brighter color with her grey jacket. She is so talented that we actually chatted about color ranges she could paint on scarves to accessorize her new garments with. She left exhausted and happy with her purchases!

Then I began my second hunt for Chris Jones. Have I mentioned it was really a zoo, and by then I was looking for the bar and a glass of wine. I had done my interviews and quite honestly, could have dressed Chris with one eye open. Chris is a local jewelry artist that I have been working with as a client and custom jeweler for my own clients for several years. I have watched her jewelry evolve beautifully and have enjoyed collaborating on many custom works. Her work is definitely worth checking out at www.christinejonesjewelry.com.

It was only by coincidence that both women are artist and both entered my contest and won. Now that is what I call using Facebook to your advantage!

I finally found Chris and promised to be back to find her again once I had been through the store pulling items for her. I came up with a great sage green bomber jacket, a drape neck black, grey and muted red sleeveless top to pair with a wonderful red jacket we just bought her from another store. I also found The Limited's signature Cassidy pant that fits most women in a beautiful camel color. Lastly, knowing that Chris wanted to buy something for her teenage daughter, I pulled a silver sequin sleeveless top to pair with a with a long sleeve fitted tee under it or a cardigan sweater over it for versatile look for school. Chris moved behind a rack, not wanting to wait for a fitting room, and proceeded to do what I see often with the elderly when not wanting to bother to go to a fitting room. Layer and try on, and then look for a mirror somehow. Mission accomplished. For Chris's wardrobe it is all about a few great jackets, basic bottoms and shirts, enabling her to highlight her own jewelry designs. The sage green bomber jacket will is a wonderful addition as a wardrobe builder for Chris. I suggested that Chris have the knit cuff cut off to fit her arm length. Simple tailoring of any garment is your best investment. So it was a win-win for everyone.

Another reason why I love my job...

Another reason why I love my job, you often get to meet some of the coolest people. Famous, not so much, but creative and exciting and passionate about what they do!

I had the opportunity to meet and interview Elliot Staples, the Senior Vice President of Design for The Limited. His smile and genuine warmth is the first thing you notice and that’s just his face. His body language makes you feel at ease immediately. He is all about being yourself and when asked about his own personal approach to dress he replied "simple and classic, and I love jeans." So check out the picture and I expect you will agree.

Oh, but his shoes.... a washed grey leather was an indicator that he has a thing for shoes and loves style! Sitting down with Clinton Kelly a year ago was very reminiscent of my chat with Elliot. We were like two old fashionista's trading style secrets while discussing best approaches to styling women, great looks and color palettes for the season. We also talked about up and coming projects for The Limited, and we were both very excited.

Making that connection with Elliot was like putting on my favorite shoe. Comfortable and sassy! Elliot loved fashion as a child and still has the paper dolls that he made (my Barbie’s were my mannequins) and credits his mother’s talent as an artist for much of his younger inspiration. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, he worked for Adrienne Vittadini and most recently, The Gap. I asked him how he made his mark at The Gap, because most designers won't leave a fashion house until they have accomplished something significant in their career. He shyly admitted that he created the "Rainbow Crazy sweater" which is the classic stripe sweater that The Gap continues making every season in one shape or another. His early career and passion was built on designing sweaters.

Elliot has been with The Limited now for over ten years, but has been overseeing the design for 5 to 6 years. I wanted to talk about things that came up for me as a stylist and to get his take on what I encounter. I asked how The Limited would take into account this season’s trend with darker clothes on top and light clothes on the bottom. The rule has always been the opposite to slim the body visually from top to bottom. He replied camel pants, and yes, go for the white pants to be worn year round! As Elliot and I continued to compare notes, we found that The Limited follows many of my same rules of thumb:

Wear whatever colors you like, but keep closest to your neck and face colors that enhance your eyes and face color.
We vote no for matchy-matchy and monochromatic. Go tonal instead. Selecting tones of a color through underpinning and accessories increase your wardrobe ten-fold.
Always try at least one new item that might not be in your comfort zone.
Mix browns, black, navy, grey and camel with shades of red as a pop of color. Everyone should own something red or animal or python print in their wardrobe.
Build a wardrobe of 50% of pants, sweater, skirts and jackets and the other 50% should be underpinning (shirts, tanks) shoes, belts, scarves and jewelry.

I love asking stylists and designers for their top picks of the season. I asked for 5 but I have to tell you with all the great options at The Limited, I think Elliot went over (completely understandable). I love what he came up with!

A camel coat,
color block top, sweater or dress,
a full skirt,
a great pair of jeans,
anything animal or python print,
a scarf, and,
a denim shirt.

After I finished asking about the fall line, I had one last question that I was quite curious about. So where does The Limited go from here? What's in the pipeline? Elliot's eyes began to widen and a broad smile appeared as he was quick to announce the October launch of a plus size collection sizes 14-24 called Eloquii. It will be available online and was designed after the CEO Linda Heasley fielded numerous requests from plus size women craving to have on trend fashion clothing that didn't compromise on fit and quality. The line will only be available online for the time being, but I expect the next move will to have actual stores carrying the line when it does well. Hooray for The Limited - despite the downturn in the economy, they continue to move forward by listening to consumer’s needs and focusing on what a consumer will actually purchase.

As the interview wound down, only because I needed to interview the CEO as well, I marveled at how at ease he is with himself and the goals of The Limited. As I mentioned at the beginning you just wanted to hug him because he too shares something that I am so passionate about! We both love making people look and feel good in their clothing while staying true to themselves! As we posed for our picture, I jokingly threatened to give him a kiss while waiting for Marci Milito to snap a picture. He turned to me with a smile and acknowledged that it would be ok. He is just that nice and really a true asset to the company on many levels!

Another exciting chapter in the many fun things I do with my job occurred last night. I attended the grand opening of The Limited at Streets of Southpoint Mall. Part of the grand opening events included a fashion show, and wow - loved the fashions for fall!

The Limited, under the guidance of relatively new CEO Linda Heasely, is looking to remake their mark. Linda has been CEO at the Ohio-based company for the last three and a half years, and is, predictably, charged with making The Limited even more successful than it is.

Yes, they still make great business suit separates with three different fits of pants, skirts and jackets that are washable and easy to wear, from business casual to corporate. Similar to what I teach my clients, The Limited is hoping to teach their customers to wear what I like to call lifestyle dressing. The Limited hopes to move women towards making buying decisions when building their wardrobe to encompass all aspects of their lives. The idea is that by taking separates and what I call underpinnings (tops and sweaters) and changing up the looks with accessories and shoes for weekend wear, you will be able to extend your wardrobe with The Limited from weekend to office and back again. Pretty much, you’ll find what you need at The Limited for whatever you do.

I had an opportunity, and I don't say that lightly ‘cuz it’s a huge deal, to sit down with both Linda and Senior Vice President of Design, Elliot Staples, after the fashion show. I approached Linda first and before the fashion show to introduce myself. She is lovely, and I mean that in every sense of the word. Petite and chic with fabulous trademark round frames. We talked about the fact that I had worn The Limited clothing years ago when I was in high school and later in college, and that naturally led to a conversation about the challenge of getting customers today to understand the importance of buying core basics for a wardrobe when young and learning how to build a varied wardrobe from there.

Linda agrees with me that the challenge is to buy quality pieces and not look for the "quick fix" of buying an outfit for a night out. In essence, training younger buyers to not run to H & M or Forever 21 for a lesser quality, trendier garment for that one time wear, but to think in the long term and buy something that looks great and adds to your wardrobe in a more positive way. My own personal challenge is my college age daughter, who of course I love dearly, does shop for the moment of the event and not for the long term. Quality over quantity! Buy that wow silver sequin top that is $40 for work under a jacket, worn over a white blouse with the collar pop up or for night wear with a pair of jeans or jeggings! That is how to evaluate the cost per wearing an item - whether you can wear it multiple times and in different situations.

I noticed also that the The Limited has worked very hard to introduce their new brand positioning. I asked Linda how they have done that and she mentioned through updating their stores with a whole new look, a print campaign in all major magazines that highlights their new look, fashion events like the grand opening I attended last night, visually appealing new store windows (I must agree), and engaging their customers in conversation using social media. Linda has had the company revamp the website and now provides an e-commerce shopping cart so you can buy things online if they aren’t in the stores already. She worked closely with the creative team to map The Limited's new direction and marketing campaigns and has returned The Limited to profitability for the first time in 17 years.

Linda is obviously a strategic thinker. I asked her how her background, a degree from Harvard and stints with Timberland and CVS, has helped her move The Limited to this new-found success. She gave credit to her wonderful hard working team and the added fashion strength of Elliot Staples. She gave her design team the challenge of coming up with 8 items each season that women could mix and match to get a month’s worth of new looks. Every woman is looking to get more bang for their buck, and she recognizes that in any economy that sentiment will remain true. She wants women that don't necessarily have the money to spend on many new looks to have clothes in their closet and to find relevance in what they want and need. Linda fervently believes that The Limited can do that for women, and after spending time with her, I have no doubt she will achieve her goals. I look forward to meeting her again and appreciated her honestly and approach.

And for all the information she gave me, the only request she made of me?.....getting women to try pegged and pleated pants. I can work on that!

When Free Is Too Easy!

This coming Thursday, August 25th, from 6pm-8pm The Limited will be launching their new look at a fashion show at Southpoint Mall in Durham. I am quite excited to see the new direction that Head of Design Elliot Staples has taken the stores. Five Fall Fashion Trends For Men

It is about time to begin to thinking about what fall fashion has to offer for men. Go ahead and try these fashions on for size!

Plaid warms up with bolder stronger hues. A plaid offers a crisp masculine look when paired with khaki, brown or any dark denim and a leather jacket for fall

A camel sweater is a wonderful neutral paired with a dress pant and casual boot. A pullover sweater with a zipper at the neck is a versatile look and especially nice with a crew neck color tee or a button down shirt

A toggle style jacket or coat in a dark color of navy or grey are wonderful additions as a wardrobe builder and a stylish look for fall

A backwoods boot (rugged looking with a dark rubber heal) looks best when neatly paired with jeans or for a tailored business casual look. Once you invest in a great pair of boots you will have them for years. The leather boot, once worn, actually looks better.

Lastly, a monk strap shoe will certainly put any conservative traditional oxford to shame. It offers a strong look and great alternative for men who like to step out of the box!

This fall, men’s clothing will be inspired by a bold military feel combined with a rugged outdoor look! I think country music star Blake Shelton could wear these looks well!

What does ‘summer casual’ for the office really mean?

This past Sunday the News and Observer carried an article from another syndicated paper about summer dressing in the workplace. Summer in the workplace tends to bring out the casual dress in people, and these days many offices allow it as a workplace perk. However, sometimes people do not recognize that there are some taboos, and that summer casual at the office doesn’t mean wear what you would out for a night on the town. And it really doesn’t mean wear what you want to a corporate retreat. Here are some tips and suggestions of things to avoid so you don't get called into the boss's office!

More often than not during the summer, offices with allow Friday's to be dress down day, and typically relax the jeans rule to allow shorts, but this does not mean you should break out your shortest shorts or Daisy Dukes
Leave the flips flops at home
Sheer blouses should be worn with a camisole
Mini-skirts and strapless tops are still taboo

The most important thing to remember is it isn't always about what you can wear so much as what you should wear. Do the clothes fit your body without showing more than is socially acceptable in the workplace? Your clothes shouldn't highlight one area of your body more than another, and if bare skin shows, it shouldn’t be because it has been squeezed out of too tight clothes. Casual doesn't give you the right to look sloppy.

As a final tip it is recommended for summer work events or outings to keep in mind it probably isn't the best place to wear a revealing halter top or a speedo to the law partner’s beach home. Bottom line is to remember to be a team player and look to your boss to set the tone!

Undergarments - Take Care of Them so They Keep Holding You Together

I recently ordered some new foundations from a wonderful online company called Linda the Bra Lady. I giggled because I have a bra fitter at Belk at Crabtree that I call Betty the Bra Lady. I have used Betty the Bra Lady personally and for clients for years. I checked out Linda the Bra Lady because I was looking for something specific for a client and could not find it locally.

The website, www.lindasOnline.com, is worth checking out not only for the vast amount of styles and cup sizes, but is also a great resource for bathing suits. If I had known about it a month ago I could have used it as a great resource for myself. I did a great disservice to myself by waiting until mid-July to look for another bathing suit top! Imagine the stylist shopping for herself last! But I digress…

After talking to a very knowledgeable salesperson (my new BFF), I was able to increase my bra fitting insight ten-fold. This company can fit women from sizes AA-N cups. Now that is amazing! Move over Betty, Linda has entered the building. The bottom line is if you have a specific need, it is worth checking out your options with Linda the Bra Lady.

In the meantime, here is some great bra care advice that I received from Linda!

Hand Washing Your Bras

Fill a basin with lukewarm water.
Add Silk and Lingerie Wash as specified on the container, and actually a mild liquid soap is just fine.
Soak lingerie overnight, although a good 15 minutes is fine, too.
Rinse thoroughly to remove excess soap.
Pat the bras dry and reshape the cup with your hands. It is important to avoid ringing to prevent straps or cups from taking on a new life form.
Always hang to dry and whatever you do-don't put them in the dryer!

Storing Your Molded Bras

Stack your bras in your drawer.
Never invert one cup into the other. Doing it will destroy the fibers in the molding, and make the cups bumpy and shorten the life of the bra. Really?? Hmm....
When traveling, pack your molded cup bras last, stacking on of top of each other and stuff the cups with panties so that they hold their shape. Hmmm, I wonder if my grandmother ever did this? Everything in her suitcase was always covered with tissue paper!

Moving Down The Body......

So we all have breasts and a chest. Like I said when I started the first part of the series, we all have the same parts, just differently shaped. Again, we gotta work with what we have because for most of us plastic surgery is not an option!

Small-chested women may feel they get the raw end of the stick when it comes wearing many styles and silhouettes. Not so. Check out these tips!

Choose tops that have details around the neckline or gathered in at the bust to amplify the fullness of the chest.
Make sure your clothes are fitted to your body and avoid items that are shapeless.
Choose crew, boat or slight v-necks to keep the focus up around your chest and neck. Deep v-necklines and low plunging necklines will only draw the eye downward.
Select jackets or blouses that have ruffles, pockets or embellishments to add fullness in appearance to the eye.

Large chested women may have instant cleavage, but certainly they have their own set of challenges. Looking balanced and not top heavy requires a few tricks, as well.

V-necks and open necklines are the most flattering styles to not appear too top heavy or off balance.
Avoid shapeless tops, as you will appear frumpy. On the other hand, tops too tight will give you a sausage affect, so select carefully!
Select tops that come to your hipbone. It will elongate your torso, but also give you the balance needed.

Regardless of your chest size it is most important to get a good bra fitting twice a year by a certified bra fitter. Keep in mind that weight gain or loss, giving birth, or menopause changes the size of your bust. A good bra fitting will change the fit of your clothing. Clients are always amazed! So before you head out for any new fall clothes do yourself a favor and go get fitted.

This past Friday evening I attended an auction benefitting fashionSPARK at the Raleigh Institute of Contemporary Art. fashionSPARK is a part of Sparkcon and the Visual Art Exchange.fashionSPARK is in its’ sixth year and is the largest annual fashion show in the Triangle. It was a great experience meeting many of the designers and speaking to them about their ideas and inspiration. There is so much artistic talent in the triangle that people don't know about!

Last year it drew a crowd of over 1,500 spectators in downtown Raleigh's City Plaza. fashionSPARK 2011,"Wear What You Are" will feature thirteen up and coming fashion, accessory and green designers throughout the Triangle. The show evokes and celebrates the true nature and joy of individual expression though fashion. This year’s event is September 15-18 in downtown Raleigh. I hope everyone will join me in supporting this event, especially with all the creative talent that we have in our own backyard.

I have clients of all different shapes, sizes, and ethnicities. We all have similar parts, but it is amazing how they vary. What works for one client may not work for another. I always remind clients that we need to work with what we have and feel good about ourselves while doing it. So there are a few tips that I'd like to pass along. Over the next week or so, I will work my way down the body providing tips to keep in mind as we move into fall, which is right around the corner. You know what that means.....cooler weather!

If you have narrow shoulders, don't go the way of shoulder pads! Just say no to the 80's. Choose shirts that have the armholes that sit off the shoulders, like raglan sleeves, or shirts that have a drop armhole to soften the look of the shoulders. Avoid unstructured jackets, as it will create an even softer shoulder line. Create the allusion of width by wearing scarves or shirts with shoulder details like epaulets. Look for shirts that have a boat neck and stay away from v-necks. Think in terms of width or horizontally shaped necklines. That doesn't include horizontal stripes!

If you have broad shoulders, look for shirts that have stretch with lycra or spandex. Avoid sweaters or tops that may lose shape and then appear sloppy. Remember to fit your shoulders when buying shirts and have the rest of the body of the shirt altered as needed. A good tailor will give your shirt the correct fit! Buy clothes to fit your body, avoiding the temptation to buy a bigger size to overcompensate for the width of your shoulders. Long necklaces and long scarves give the illusion of a narrower shoulder line. Opt for pants and skirts that are fuller in width to counterbalance wider shoulders, not with bell bottoms width, but do avoid pencil skirts. Lastly, but most importantly, buy v-necks and not square or rounded!

The Savvy Stylist Answers A Girlfriend’s Question

I recently had lunch with my girlfriend Lynn, who is probably one of the nicest, sweetest, most southern gals I know. She is a gifted artist and quite honestly, has one of the cutest figures of a woman over 50 that I know. She really has great legs, but sometimes questions what is appropriate to wear given her age. She also doesn't want to invest in items that are really trendy, but would like to look updated.

Her first question is about tunics. She loves the look of tunics, but realizes they are too short to wear without anything under them, great legs or not.

I suggest, in this heat, to look for stretch cotton/leggings or jeggings to wear with a tunic. Take a thicker woven belt (at least 3 inches) and place it on your hips. Not only will you look stylish, but this look will also transition into fall. A flat or wedge shoe works for summer and in the fall switch it up to a shoe boot or gladiator woven heel.

Check out www.shopstyle.com for leggings that are different lengths and will work well with tunics or long fitted or ruched tees. This combination is a great age-appropriate look for older women, but make sure your top covers your back end, regardless of how great a figure you may have. This is not wonderful look for women who have larger thighs or back ends, as leggings generally are quite fitted. If you are heavier, make sure your tunic comes to your mid thigh.

Her second question is about camisole tops, or camis. Lynn loves to layer camis but doesn't like the look of her bra showing between the straps of her camis and tanks tops. I agree, the bra thing showing tends to look a little trashy and is not a great look for a grown woman. She also struggles with what to wear for a bra with tops that are macramé in the front or back or a racer back tee shirt.

I suggested she go to Gigi's at Stonehenge Market on Creedmoor Road in Raleigh or their Cary location. The perfect solution is a racer back camisole that has molded breast cups and a bandeau that has the same molded breast cup. For women that are not particularly chesty, it really does the trick. So these are what she chose!

The summer linen pant…the right choice!

So I bet everyone agrees, it’s often just too hot to bother dressing up. There are a few options to get a pulled together look when jeans are not a worthy choice.

Here is some food for thought on selecting linen for warm weather dressing:

Linen is a natural fabric made from the flax plant
Linen is comfortable, versatile and cool!
China is the number one exporter of linen (no big surprise there)
Today linen is often sprayed with a special finish to reduce wrinkling
Most linen can be hand washed or put in a washing machine
To maintain the crisp look of linen, the dry cleaner can provide a “press only” option
Never use a steamer to remove wrinkles, as it will break down the fibers
Lastly, when traveling, pack your linen in tissue paper and in a plastic dry cleaning bag. When you arrive, remember to unpack and hang it as soon as possible to prevent any additional wrinkles (my grandmother used to do this)

Now that you have a basic knowledge about linen, how about how to actually wear it! For summer the best look for linen is a loosely fit pant with a fitted blouse or tee shirt with a hat, scarf and sunglasses. Great relaxed dressing! For a dressier look, opt for again a loose fit pant, fitted or full top with a cropped fitted jacket. It is fine to have the shirttail hang below the jacket, especially if it is gathered towards the hem.

Try another easy look with linen as we transition into the fall season. Hard to imagine less than a week after the official start to summer, but a great structured white linen pant looks fabulous with a cotton or cashmere sweater, scarf and a crossover body bag. If you’re still thinking a scarf will be too warm, opt for layering with several long necklaces. Forgo the scarf and crossover bag and grab a wristlet purse instead. You can also go the route of pairing a linen pant in the fall with fitted long sleeve blouses and a cropped double breasted jacket or jean jacket for a more conservative feel.

Whatever way you decide to wear your linen pants, remember that linen can be worn through the fall, just as white is a year round color. Have fun and mix and match your fabrics and textures because maximizing your wardrobe is truly the name of the game!

The Hat's Have It

I have wanted to blog about hats for few months now. I love hats and I was certainly all about hats during our most recent royal wedding. Personally, I tend to wear hats for a purpose and not necessarily for fashion. I mostly wear the baseball style hat for tennis because I find it is helpful with the sun and glare. I also have more feminine hats to go with the bathing suit look or maxi dresses when I know I will be outside and really need to protect my hair color. Oh yes, and a cowboy hat when I traveling out west when I know I'm all that. Did I actually just confess to coloring my hair and feeling the need to look like I belong in a particular scene? Of course!

Back to why I am finally blogging about hats. This morning I was running through JC Penny, looking at a new contemporary line for another project, when I suddenly stopped to look at their large hat display. WOW!!!! JC Pen'a, as I call it, has awesome hats. So now let's get real about hats. Here are a few facts about hats to keep in mind:

Before you decide you want to incorporate hats into your wardrobe, be sure you are definitely going to wear them.
Consider the shape of your face. If you are tall, look for a hat that has a shorter crown and wide brim. Avoid angles and narrow hats. If you are smaller in size, do the exact opposite. If you are full figured, check out wide and large brims. These guidelines are similar, of course, in dressing. It is all about the balance.
Try on hats in a three way mirror and make sure it looks good in proportion to your height, frame and overall silhouette.
Consider the shape of your face. If you have a long face, choose hats that have a wide, floppy or curled brim. If you have round face, choose hats that have angular shapes and high brims. Avoid hats that are circular or floppy, as you may begin to look like a clown! Lastly, if you have an oval face, the world is yours. Buy whatever you like, because it will probably fit your face.
Make sure you buy the right size and evaluate how it feels on your head. Go up or down in size until it fits. As a rule of thumb, most women wear between a 21 and 22 inch hat.
Keep in mind your hairstyle. Hat head is not very stylish, and you do want to be able to wear your hair styled as you normally do.
Color and fabric of the hat should be considered with your skin and hair color. Too much contrast will be unflattering and too much pattern will leave people wondering if you are dressing in costume.

The Five Most Commonly Selected Hats

Baseball Caps: Sporty, great for workout clothes (tennis gear for me), simple t-shirt and jeans, or a bad hair day. A serious no-no for a business casual look!

Beret: The French beret rocks with dresses, jumpsuits, shorts, jeans and can be found in a variety of colors, fabrics or jewelry embellishments . The beret is best worn on various angles set on the head which is a statement itself, particularly when paired properly with your wardrobe. A beret tends to be more of a fall/winter look, although I have seen many worn this summer in lighter weight fabrics.

Cowboy hat: Great look if you happen to be living in an area that has the country feel but in most other areas the cowboy hat doesn't translate as well. Cowboy boots have been widely accepted in the fashion scene, but hats tend to look somewhat out of place if not in the majority. The one exception to that is when the hat is made of straw. A smaller brimmed straw cowboy hat is great with white jeans, rompers, sundresses, shorts - anything more fitted. I would definitely avoid activewear, as the fashion police will probably come a calling!

Fedora: Originally made of felt, but is again found in cotton, suede and patterns with feathers, beads and pendants. I love this look, as it is very stylish. and can be as trendy or not as you wish! Jeans, fitted dresses and skirts, shorts and anything with a vest or long boyfriend cardigan and scarf are perfect items to pair together with a fedora.

Sun hats: Usually made of straw with some sort of ribboning along the skull area. Great for the pool, beach or paired with a sundress, long or short. If you are wearing it for protection make sure the brim is wide enough to cover your face and shoulders.

A final tip: Make sure the hat you choose is not only a good fit, but one that fits your personality and style, as well. Hats are not for everyone, but a great way to pump up your style and generally an inexpensive fashion fit! As for me, I am heading back to JC Pen'a for some hat shopping!

The Red Carpet Fashion Lounge

So last night was my big debut hosting the Red Carpet Fashion Lounge for the Carolina Music Awards. Having never hosted a fashion lounge before, I went through several differing emotions. I actually never got nervous, more excited and curious about how it would actually roll out.

The event started about a half an hour late....hmmm, would that happen if it was televised? Probably not, but these things happen. I must have paced up and down the walkway of the entrance of the Progress Energy building about 40 times mouthing what would be my intro: “Good evening Raleigh, welcome to the 2nd Annual Red Carpet Fashion Lounge for the Carolina Music Awards. I'm your host Savvy Stylist Suzanne Libfraind and you are in for a treat tonight!” Blah, blah blah. I did it and made it through the intro only to slide into that usual comfort zone of me being me and chatting.

For the next two and a half hours I interviewed nominees for the Carolina Music Awards (rappers, rock and roll bands, country western folks, and R&B), as well as the event sponsors and organizers, designers, up-coming student designers, and three local boutiques. All my hours of prep work and the rewriting of my 3 by 5 cards went out the window! Jeannie, my marketing manager, warned me that I would have to improvise and just roll with any changes. So roll with it , I did. I found my rhythm and then began doing what I do best - talk fashion and find out what people are up to.

There was so much energy and buzz. Jeannie was like a drill sergeant, sending people in and out of the Red Carpet Fashion Lounge. Did I mention there was no red carpet in my fashion lounge, but white shag instead? The outfits were wild, some very dramatic, tight fitting, and extremely colorful which often left me giggling and smiling from ear to ear. I loved it all! From the young designers showing their creations to guy in the audience who wore a vibrant rainbow color vertical striped suit (from Loudmouth Golf), I was excited by the energy of the whole event.

As my hosting duties wound down around 8:15, I continued to live in the moment. I had my husband, Sid, and my parents along with a handful of good friends there in support. They, too, seemed to enjoy the buzz and wildness of the participants and audience in their various get ups. After catching my breath, I moved onto the photo area for a few snaps on the Carolina Music Awards red carpet with various groups of people, including the organizers for Triangle and Charlotte Fashion Weeks. I walked with my family inside to watch the music awards, hosted by Maddona Nash. Cute country singer with lots of personality! We didn't stay for the entire awards show, as I found I couldn't wait to get home and just process the whole evening. Some experiences you just want to savor and this one was just that!

If you're in Raleigh, your shit better have pleats. It's basically the town's mascot. And here's it's unofficial motto: "The world is your golf course." Southern bankers cruise from home to work and back home to change out of their off-the-rack, BOGO suits and into amoeboid polo shirts and hippy trousers. It's a great city to swoop in for the kill at happy hour. Girls in these bars have never seen a tailored anything, so it's easy to turn a head.—Andrew Richdale

WHAT?!?!?

Today I got a call from Penn Holderness, anchor for NBC in Raleigh. He asked if I had heard about the new ranking from GQ noting that Raleigh was designated one of the 35th worst dressed cities. Yes, I had, as I had just finished discussing it with my producer Kim Green of My Carolina Today. As I told Kim and later Penn, I think there are so many transients living here - how could we earn that label? Sure, there are many people that have grown up here from generation to generation and they may know nothing but the pleated pants, but isn't that just stereotyping the rest of us?

What about the guys that actually developed their own sense of style? Case in point, as I stated to Penn. Here he was interviewing me in his navy pinstripe suit, obviously custom made. I doubt he can buy off the rack with his build, although he was sporting a pair of flip flops on his feet. As the interview winds up, I address the fact that he is wearing flat front trousers with flip flops and obviously has his own sense of style (actually Penn mentioned his feet sweat - with the temps this high, I think everyone’s feet are sweating). I simply stated that the men wearing flat front trousers are more fashion foreword, and also don't have a gut. Generally, it is guys that have a larger belly or backend that need more room to cover their girth. So, pleated khakis have nothing to do with being poorly dressed, or with being from Raleigh.

I have witnessed the fashion growth in the Triangle over the past 20 plus years. We actually have stores for guys that dress for the hip hop scene, as well as the guys who prefer more of the urban feel. As for custom-made or tailored clothing options, there is even a new guy in Apex by the name of Charles Ryan who has designed a machine that will calibrate your exact size to custom make a shirt or suit. So Andrew Richdale, put that in your pipe and smoke it. We are doing just fine!

Mike Morse from G105!

Tomorrow I am filming a segment with Mike Morse from G105’s Bob and the Showgram. I had never met him but liked him as soon as he walked through the station’s door. Mike oozes an urban style and swagger with his dark, square frames, black dress shirt and jeans. I did giggle at his checkerboard Vans his feet were sporting. Based upon the pictures he previously sent, I thought he could rock a fedora. I told him to wear the hat and check out the response from others. I asked him to bring several items from his closet that he didn't know quite what to do with.

Here's the checklist of what he had and how it can be updated:

1. Mike had an off-white linen suit he bought two years ago for his wedding that he never wore. He’d opted to wear a tux instead. I recommend the following:

Take the white linen jacket and pair it with dark jeans and a short sleeve button up, lightweight shirt with a tonal plaid in blue, cream, tan or beige. Pair with a loafer or driving moccasin.
Take the linen pant and pair with short sleeve button down with a textured fabric or vertical stripes. Another option would be a silk polyester blend slight v-neck shirt. Be sure to wear the shirt out. A fedora will help relax the look.

2. Mike has a long sleeve white linen shirt and doesn't know how to wear it. Here are two options:

Roll the sleeves up right below the elbow and pair with a darker camel or brown longer length short that has a drawstring around the cuff. Try a pair of Tom’s shoes, a driving moccasin, or neutral leather flip flop. Tennis player Rafa Nadal has rocked this look for years!
Opt for a drawstring camel color linen pant with cargo pockets.

3. White loafers! How to wear them:

Dark jeans and a lighter colored shirt. No white shirts or khaki pants.
Dark linen or seersucker pants with a stripe other than white.
Dress plaid shorts with an un-tucked polo. Keep the plaid muted and not vibrant in color.

If you are big and tall, keep these tips in mind:

1. If you are a larger man, be sure to wear clothes that fit your body as fuller clothes make you appear heavier,
2. Stay away from all horizontal stripes. Opt for vertical lines, as they will elongate the body.
3. Darker colors usually slim the body, just as lighter tones tend to make the body appear larger.
4. Choose monochromatic or tonal dressing. For example, brown pants, camel or khaki tones that will blend and not distract.

Tyler House and The Art of Style

Yesterday I was at Tyler House for the Shop Local event. Jennifer Huggard is the store owner and probably one of the most respected merchants in Raleigh. Her store always is merchandised well and her employees are always helpful, and willing to give an honest opinion. I particularly like the back and forth banter that I share with Anne Suber, a longtime employee. She is born and bred here in Raleigh and knows most everyone, which always makes me giggle. She loves to name drop (in a nice way) and I never, and I mean never, know who she is talking about.

I have been working with clients at Tyler House since I started consulting almost 20 years ago. Although the clothes are generally traditional, I always find a handful of trendy items that are great to build and spruce up a wardrobe. Jennifer's store is often a surprise to many younger people who shop it and get a fabulous jacket, sweater or dress. Yesterday morning, as I expected, there was steady stream of patrons looking for last minute great buys on summer items. The store has a full blown sale going hoping to blow out the last third of spring/summer goods, as fall deliveries are beginning to trickle in.

I met several shoppers, but remember one in particular, a young bride looking for a strapless, soft pink dress for a wedding gown instead of the traditional white. Just as I would with any client, we spoke about what exactly she was looking for and what she envisioned for her special day. After giving her several ideas for stores to hit I came to the conclusion that having the dress made would be the best route, instead of spinning her wheels for a dress that isn't out there. I sent her out the door to Mulberry Silks and Fine Fabrics in the Carrboro Mall and armed her with the contact info of a few seamstresses I trust, and she left with a smile. This was a great example of a day in my life in working with clients. It is all about figuring out what works best for people’s budget and lifestyle!

My afternoon took me to finish my week helping the Independent’s Contest for ShopLocal Raleigh up at The Art of Style at Brier Creek. Kendra, the store owner, has begun to establish a great following and network of clients in their early twenties to late thirties. Her clothes are trendy, but not overly fad-like, and Kendra stocks items that if you are even remotely fashion savvy, you can pair up with basics and look fabulous. Kendra has been open maybe a year and has worked hard at doing events for charity, as she sadly lost her husband a few years ago to cancer. Her purpose is evident and her knowledge of what she wants her store to be is clear.

One of the guys shopping the store was a young professional that loves the look of the items she carries, and shops regularly. We worked together on pulling together a few looks and we sent him to try things on. Clearly, he was probably over whelmed with a group of women telling him how great he looked in several of the fitted shirts he tried on. I believe he ended up purchasing two shirts and left with a smile. While there I worked with Kendra and Chris Jones, a local jewelry artist, to pull together outfits for the Red Carpet Fashion Lounge at the Carolina Music Awards, which is happening next Sunday night at the Progress Energy Center. The Art of Style is one of the featured boutiques, and Chris is doing the jewelry for it. I love mixing items that people wouldn't normally put together to give a new twist to fashion. I was able to do just that and with Chris's fabulous necklace, we quickly were able to pick the items for the runway. I dashed out the door just in time to pick up my friends at the airport - two other fashionista's from Baltimore. They are coming into town to make their mark…more to come on that.

Overall, it was a wonderful week of working with stores for the Shop Local event and I look forward to doing it again soon!

Dapper Style House Has Style!

Last night at Dapper turned out to be great fun. The new store manager/ buyer is Dusty and he really rocks. With about 6 years of experience from another store, I really believe the insight he brings to Dapper will propel them to furthering their mark in the community. He shared with me his future plans of incorporating more men’s furnishings -new lines like Ted Baker and an assortment of complete offerings for the trendy Raleigh guy. Women's clothing will still play a part in the store as they find a look for women wanting something other than a basic party dress.

Less is more and I get the feeling Dapper will dig deep to get that new look for clients. Dapper is unique in that they have a bar - it gives new meaning to shopping! The bar will also be expanded with more nightly and weekend events. They have even brought in an NC student to do a visual story for their window monthly. How cool is that?!?

We certainly had that bonding moment and I especially enjoyed his insight and excitement of what is to come. I expect in the fall I will join them again and plan something that will showcase their new look. The interior will also be revamped and updated. I only hope that don't get rid of the swing in the store. Nothing like swinging on a swing to feel youthful! What a great evening at Dapper, and even walked out with a LBD. I was rocking it!

Stains, Stains and More Stains

This blog is dedicated to my client who is forever worrying about how to deal with stains she gets on her clothing. For many of us the worry of wearing new clothes, especially white clothes, in the summer may send us in to a tizzy, or better yet lead us to not wear a particular item. I frequently remind clients that purchased clothes are actually meant to be worn and are not a closet dust collector. If by chance you stain your clothing, then follow these simple directions or just write it off to a great meal, too many adult beverages, or my favorite saying sh#t happens! Happy washing and let me know how these tips work for you!

When applying stain-removing solutions to fabric, it's best to work at the stain from the back of the fabric and not the front. This way the stain won't spread deeper into the fabric.

Mystery Stain Removal from Clothing

For stains of an unknown origin, try following these steps: First, rinse the stain in cold water. Pretreat with a prewash, then rinse again. Now wash the garment with an all-fabric bleach, in water that's as hot as the manufacturer recommends, adding extra detergent. Let it air dry, and if the stain is still there, soak in cold water for half an hour. Sponge it with a cleaning solvent, let it sit for 5 minutes, and then rinse again. Repeat all of the above if the stain persists.

If your stain is on white clothing, you should be able to restore your clothes to white, and not damage the fibres of the fabric, by soaking them in lukewarm water and color safe or oxygen bleach for 24 hours, then rinse them with vinegar and water. Mix using one tablespoon of vinegar to one quart of water. After treating your stained clothing overnight, wash them in hot water with chlorine bleach added. This should refresh them to their original white state. If possible, dry them in the sun.

Washing White Clothes

When washing white clothes, hot water works the best, since your detergent will dissolve and work the most effectively at this temperature. Water rinses equally well at any temperature, however, so be sure to rinse all your clothes using cold water to save on hot water. If your clothes are not particularly soiled, you could probably get away with using hot water every second or third washing to save on hot water as well. Be sure to always follow the washing directions given on the label of your clothes for best results.

Deodorant and Perspiration Stains

Yellow underarm shirt stains are likely caused by a combination of deodorant and perspiration. Many deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum salts. When these salts are combined with laundry detergent, especially in cooler water settings, they are not easily dissolved, and they remain on the fabric.

To remove the stains, try soaking the shirts in warm water with an enzyme pre-soak product or rubbing the soiled area with white vinegar. Wash in the hottest water safe for the fabric. If the stain remains, dampen and sprinkle stain with meat tenderizer. Let stand for about an hour, and launder again. To avoid new stains from forming, always wash the shirts in the hottest water safe for the fabric. Also, allow antiperspirant to dry completely before dressing.

Follow these tips, and make your clothes last for the entire season without having to buy new!

Kick off for Independent’s Week! (Reposted)

As many of you know, or maybe you don’t, I am a member of Shop Local Raleigh. They are running a contest where you shop at different stores, get stamps and potentially win gift certificates. My business is shopping, so I decided to visit some stores and give a free in-store consult to shoppers and see what they had. First stop…Galatea.

The women at Galetea couldn't be friendlier! Cheryl is the owner, Susan is her store manager and Lissa helps, as well. This is by far is the most creative bunch of women I have worked with in a long time. The clothes are classically funk, with comfort, rich textures and interest all folded up into one. During my time there for the Shop Local event I met several women aging from 30's to mid 60's. The common theme was that most of them seemed dedicated to shopping the store while seeking somewhat of an artistic flair, but definitely wanted the versatility in look for their everyday lives.

Susan showed me a tiered shirt with various fabrics in all patterns and colors with a brown stretch waistband. She proceeded to fold the skirt, making it into a cap similar to a cloche hat dating back from the roaring 20's. She took a fabric flower (made by employee Lissa) and cinched it in the front and put it upon a patrons head. Wanda is a regular customer - very petite with a sassy short, reddish colored bob. Wow, creative and what fun. This idea, of course, got my wheels turning, as I volunteer at the Image Boutique at Duke Hospital on Wednesday afternoons. What Susan demonstrated was easy enough that I could certainly do a similar look for the patients.

Amongst many of the interesting items that Cheryl provides for her clients is a smock with a tightly gathered waist and free flowing bottom. At the bottom of the dress/skirt there is a loop that you draw upwards to pull the skirt up on one side giving the skirt an angled appearance. What is most intriguing about this skirt is that it can also be pulled up over your chest and worn as a dress. The dress also is provided with a tie that can be tied around your neck for support for larger breasted women or when worn as a skirt cinching in the waist. Hot damn, many practical uses for our 90 plus degree days. I borrowed the item and have decided it is the perfect "Gotta Have It" item for my NBC My Carolina Segments on Fridays.

I so enjoyed the people that came through while I was there, especially my new friend Mary who actually paints fine china. How cool is that?!? Galetea, near Logan's downtown, is a perfect stop for anyone looking for clothes that are cool and comfortable and interesting in color and style. Cheryl obviously works hard at find those items that will not be found elsewhere!

Second stop…..Clothes Hound

Visiting the Clothes Hound for the Shop Local event was such a treat. I am celebrating my 20th year being in business as a stylist and chatting with Bryce, the store owner, brought me back to where my fashionista ways first came about. Bryce is a young energetic mother and entrepreneur! She built a successful online business and always dreamed about having a store front.

Her store in North Raleigh has the promise of being a boutique to find small treasures for great values and prices. She had a several lines that were well priced and very versatile. For my job as a stylist, I spoke to Bryce about taking certain items and transitioning them into fall looks. She had several cute work/nightlife dresses that could certainly be worn in the fall with a simple white blouse or long sleeve fitted tee underneath. She also carries a line of camisoles and tee shirts that are made by Downeast Basics that are reasonably priced, have a nice weight, and a variety of sleeve and necklines. The light foot traffic of the evening did give me a chance to get to know Bryce and work with her on merchandising her store. She now has, in retail words, merchandise stories within her store and a great selection of dresses ranging in styles of colors, fabrics and sleeve lengths. I expect she will build a strong following of dresses with her clients as she gets the whole idea of value shopping and great looks. Go check out the store as it is so important to support local merchants and especially aspiring young women making their mark in the industry!

Fourth Of July!

So the summer heat and humidity is really kicking into gear. Today I actually felt my dress adhere to my skin and proceed to stick with no hopes of prying free. So what to do, what to do. I vote for breathable fabrics like linen and/or cotton. More to come next week on this topic as I will discuss the details of dressing for when the heat actually makes you really want to run around wearing only your birthday suit.

In the meantime, I have received over eight notifications from local boutiques offering great discounts over the holiday weekend. If you’re in town, it would be worth dropping by some of your favorite haunts, or better yet stores you don't frequent, just for the very reason of the great sales opportunities.

Purses and Pears?

I recently started working with a woman who had been out on maternity leave and was getting ready to go back to work. The stress of leaving her child and having to figure out what she could wear post- maternity is stressful itself. Most women are not exactly ready to hop back into their pre-maternity wardrobe, and without a doubt don't want to wear their maternity clothes a second longer than necessary.

We took a couple steps back and did a closet consultation, which means we went through her closet and worked with items that she had pre-pregnancy, to see what that fit now and what would fit within a month or so. We quickly made a list of must-haves to get back to work. One of the items needed was an updated purse. A diaper bag is not part of the working wardrobe and she was ready for an upgrade to what she had been using. Determining whether buying a really good quality purse on sale would be a sound investment was crucial because she really needed clothes to get back to work in. After much deliberation she decided to go for it! I was thrilled because I knew in the long run a great quality purse is a great investment.

I hear a lot from clients about their purchases, and as a general rule, how glad they are they took my advice and made a purchase I suggested, but you gotta love this update:

One day on the ride home from daycare I decided to give Charlie [older brother] a pear (yes, a whole pear) to eat in the car. Yes, I figured it could be a mess but it’s a pear, how bad could the stains be?

He did well. We get home and I bring Sam in the house while Charlie saunters in. I have to be clever and lure him into the house from the garage because his drive to lawn mow, wheel barrow and drive his truck is instinctive and magnetizes him away from the house.

We manage to get in the house without fussing and without letting Angel sneak out. Whew! I am catching my breath and taking a quiet private moment to congratulate myself when I see Trevor playing, pear nowhere in sight. Crap! What if Angel ate it?!?! Panic in my veins I ask Charlie as calmly as possible, "sweetie, where's your pear?"

"I put it in your bag mommy."

Gasp! Not at all the answer I expected. For those who don't know, I am totally cheap when it comes to purses, except my current one, a $200, on sale, Dooney & Bourke. Visions of pear juice and bits on the canvas interior roll through my brain like a powerpoint slide show. Oh my gosh this is gonna be my moment to show my toddler how self absorbed and materialistic I can be.

I walk (telling myself not to run and not make a big deal) to my 'bag'. Sure enough, inside my bag, resting on a mound of paper, receipts, and a notebook, is the pear. I had a Hallelujah! moment. No pear juice, no pear bits, no pear stains! I love my toddler; he put the pear 'away' when he was done.

Morals of the story: Pear was a good choice for the car ride home. Canvas lining is better than silky lining in bags. Put your purse out of a toddler’s reach, not next to diaper bags.

A Day in the Life of A Stylist Seeking Her Own Dress

So, I have this great gig coming up on July 17th as the host of the Red Carpet Fashion Lounge at the Progress Energy Center before the Carolina Music Awards. Basically, I get to interview designers, boutique owners, the musicians and people producing the event. Knowing that I want to look and feel fabulous for this event, I begin last week to process what store I will approach to borrow a dress. The incentive for the store is a mention in the program and several hours of me sashaying around, talking about what a fabulous dress I am wearing from this great store, and hopefully doing my dream duet with Roberta Flack. If I am going to be standing next to Roberta Flack I better look great, ‘cause I expect my singing with her will cause her to run for the exit.

Needless to say, now that I have become a dark brunette, the world of new color selections has expanded. Hmmm, do I wear a formal black-tie gown, or a simple little black dress and some fabulous jewels from a few of the local jewelry artists I like to work with? So after a sleepless night of excitement, I sent an email to the store manager of a large department store that I have shopped at for years for myself and clients, hoping that my existing long-term relationship with them will help pave the way to a yes. After all, free publicity, they get to showcase a gown, and of course, I plan on dry cleaning prior to returning it to them.

A couple days go by. A slow response of acknowledgment but finally a response - it’s a no go. However, she will pass on the information about the event to the public relations office but they don't normally publicize events they aren’t a part of. Yeah, right...wow, here I am, a stylist hoping to get a little love for all the thousands spent with them, and they can’t help with a simple gown or dress for 3 hours? Guess we’re not in LA or NYC. Ah, well, there are plenty of other stores in Raleigh.

That leaves me heading to Cameron Village, though, re-evaluating my vision of making that statement on the red carpet. I’ll have to find a specific boutique that has both a gown and a little black dress so I can see if the outfit completes the vision I have floating around in my head, without traipsing all over town. You’re probably thinking- just buy the dress, already! Formal black-tie gowns are kind of like bridesmaids dresses - what’s fashionable one season is out of fashion the next, and it never seems like you get to wear it more than once. So, faced with the option of finding something to wear that I will not be able to wear again anytime soon leaves me with the dilemma of maybe thinking consignment or using the online service, Rent The Runway. So if anyone out there has a fabulous dress that you want me to showcase and name drop your store let me know...

Raleigh certainly has come a long way in the 19 plus years I have been styling folks so you'd think this would be easy!

Dressing Tips: When It Is Actually Too Hot To Wear Clothes

The thermometer is showing over 95 degrees and you wonder if you will soon combust or just sweat out every ounce of liquid through your pores! Before that happens, check out these tips and do a quick closet check to make sure you have the tools you need to survive the heat of summer:

Opt for washable natural fibers such as linen or cotton, avoid all man made fibers.

Wear as few layers as possible and loose fitting versus tight or binding.

Wear sleeveless or sundresses whenever possible, pairing with a light sweater for those occasions you step into a movie theatre or restaurant where they keep the air conditioning at 60 degrees.

Select cap sleeve shirts and tops if the sleeveless look is not an option due to a heavier upper arm. Make sure the sleeve set is at or right below the heaviest part of your arm.

Gravitate to skirts and avoid pants or capri’s .

Wear lighter color fabrics and avoid dark tones.

Consciously decide to wear less make up and focus on a more natural look. There’s nothing worse than the feeling that your make-up is melting and running.

This is an ideal time to incorporate a little white dress into your closet and dress it up or down as needed. Pair with a jacket or structured cardigan for business and a peep toe pump or a strappy sandal for night.

Dressing to fit corporate office culture gets challenging as the summer weather heats up. Instead of dressing in suits and jackets try a sleeveless sheath dress with structured and lined jackets of linen, seersucker or polished cotton.

Lastly, I always recommend keeping a small bottle of hydration mist in your purse. You would be amazed how a quick spritz of mist will refresh you in no time flat!

I am still a believer in making an impression the first time you meet someone, because often we don't get that second chance. I dare and hope that someone challenges me on any of my suggestions!

Wear your favorite color to get yourself out of a funk or grab attention
Ever wonder what’s up with people that wear sunglasses when it is not sunny outside, especially when seen inside sporting them?
If you have family jewelry to wear, rock it out. Family heirlooms make the best stories and keep you connected to them!
For those women who have narrow shoulders, summer is the best time to wear halter necklines to give the illusion of greater width and balance your proportions.
If you have heavy upper arms, wear a short sleeve that is long enough to hide the heaviest part. Try and stay away from sleeveless.
Traveling this summer? Remember to carry a separate plastic bag with a pair of socks, tooth brush and tooth paste, and a spray bottle of spring mist for facial hydration. ooh la la!
Never hem the length of your skirts to the thickest part of your leg. Adjust the hem to so if falls right above the slender part of your leg.
Buy the best quality handbag you can afford. Not only will it last for years, but it will always make your outfit look better!
Think of your hair color and style your hair as an accessory. Change your hairstyle often as it may even become your signature!
Lastly, and this is something I do often, especially when I am out and about. Puzzling to me is that people are frequently thrown, as if receiving and accepting a compliment never happens to them. I find when I compliment others on how they look or a particular garment looks great on them, not only do I get a smile, but the person stands up a little straighter. It’s a confidence builder and everyone you know could use that every once in a while.

For Men Only: How to Pull of White Pants For Summer

Regardless of your age, men are often leery about wearing white pants for summer. Part of it is fear they will look like the Skipper on Gilligan's Island or David Cassidy when he was rocking it out in the 70's with the hit ‘I Think I Love You!’

Men, you can do it! Women have taken the plunge and begun incorporating white jeans, slacks, dress pants and casual pants into their wardrobe as a year round staple. It’s even become a whole new color palette - think white, off white, cream and winter white. Never fear, we understand that for men, white in any shade is probably still white.

There are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind while shopping. Don't over think it. Remember that white is as versatile as other, ‘regular’ khaki colors. Avoid a baggy pant silhouette, but not super skinny either. Select a pair that is fitted and fits correctly.

Check out these simple guidelines to help pull off white:

To go for a casual look, pair the white jeans or slacks with a graphic tee
For a dressier look, throw on a bright colored shirt with a sweater for layering and a pair of loafers for a relaxed look
Once you are confident wearing white, go for a white-cream colored linen pant for the summer months. Wear a contrasting shirt with texture and a dark suede shoe (now we are talking!)
Now that you have stepped out and feel confident wearing white, how about one last look for summer. Pair white or cream pants with a navy or dark linen blazer. A pinstripe cotton blend blazer looks great worn with a contrasting color dress shirt or collarless shirt.

Not only will you be rocking in white pants this summer, but you will indubitably be the coolest!

An Icon in Her Own Sense

I think I would be remiss in my job as a stylist if I did not comment on the finality of Oprah and her final good-bye to her 25 year old talk show. I’ve been thinking back to where I was in my life some 25 years ago and what I was doing as she began her journey. I had just given birth to my second child and my first child wasn’t that much older. I had gone back to work part time as a visual designer and worked for several local boutiques and SteinMart.

Oprah seemed strong and self assured and although I did not watch her on any sort of regular basis, I knew that for many she was a lifeline of support. Over the years I marveled at her sense of inner peace and beauty that was beyond her large brown eyes and flawless skin. I, along with millions of other men and women who understand the effort she went through to take control of her weight, railed in praise when she conquered her weight battle and sashayed around the stage in her tight jeans.

As the weight gradually reappeared and softened her hips and thighs, I again railed in praise that she had found an inner peace that included not wanting to fight her weight again as so many of us do. She found a healthy balance that worked for her and decided to live her life with little regret and regardless of her present size.

I often tell clients that we must work with what we are given and if we are not satisfied, then only then can we attempt a change. For me maintaining a healthy lifestyle does include eating well but also indulging in the many foods and beverages that make me happy. I know exactly where those extra pounds are going to land and stay and quite frankly I’m ok with that. I guess that is why I always liked Oprah’s tune, because I often thought her ideals were similar to mine. Here’s to living life, whether you are a stylist or fashion television icon.

I'm taking Page to Nicole’s Swimwear and Accessories to show Page how bathing suits can work for every body type. Read below for fashion & shopping tips.

1. If you want to look slimmer opt for a lighter color on top than on bottom.
2. Woman with a small bust should look for tops with ruffles, beading or pleating.
3. If you need to support a large bust choose an underwire or a hidden bra top. Stay clear of high necklines.
4. If you carry your weight through the middle, skip tankini's and opt for a wrap style or suit that gathers on the side to draw the eye away from the middle.

Shopping Tips -

Shop on a day that you are feeling good and preferably not on a weekend.
Prioritize your assets and embrace your body !
Remember that there are many different styles to choose from
The best fabric choice is a cotton and Lycra blend to hold it's shape.
Wear a thong or a snug panty when trying on swimsuits
Choose your size and add one larger when selecting what you want to try. Swim suits vary in size just like clothes do!
Be sure and check the comfort and fit of the suit in a three way mirror.
Bring a sandal to try with your suit, sneakers make a suit so much less appealing!

Merry Christmas my fellow fashionistas!

This week I typically avoid stores and malls. What I have found over the years is that people are crazy stressed and desperate to buy what they need. Fashion statements tend not to be made during this time, so I bow out ever so gracefully.

I have a humorous fashion tale to tell as we wind down 2010! So here goes....

My true friends know that once my day is over I put my work face and fashion mind to rest and enjoy the many other aspects of my full life. I have a relatively new friend that I met about 8 months ago at hot yoga. We met one day at class when I realized her car's license plate read SHOPPER 2 and I asked her about it. She works full time to support her love for shopping. "Oh my" I replied! She is the ultimate queen of discount bargain shopping. Over the past several months she has often mentioned her great steals and deals at a local large department and discount store chain. She refuses to pay full retail and will hold out until it is a true bargain! Finally she divulged to me how she accomplishes this successful plan. She takes a full price item from the rack and stashes it on another rack, well away from the original rack. Since we all know that clean up in department stores is not always done, she is able to keep tabs on the item over a several week period. Her bargain this week was a $59 blouse for $8!

This Friday on My Carolina Today...

I frequent local consignment stores to consign clients goods, or seeking for that little gem that may be hiding amongst the racks. This year I have found a few gems - like the great Kay Unger gold raw silk dress that makes me feel like Joan Cleaver from Leave it to Beaver! Every time I wear it I feel somewhat magical and oh so lovely. It is a true departure from my usual attire, but confirms my love for clothing of old. This week I traveled to Villa Consegna at Five Points in Raleigh. The owners, John and Margo, have been doing the consignment thing for probably longer than I have been a stylist. Obviously their competition has stiffened in the past 5 years as other stores have made their way into the area. I thought I would do a segment on My Carolina Today on getting the most bang for your buck when purchasing holiday wear at a local consignment store. This is what I have come up with and wanted to share if you. Be sure to catch the video segment Friday (12/17) on My Carolina Today - 11am on NBC17 in Raleigh.

Evaluate what holiday parties and functions you may need festive clothing for.
Check your closet and see what you have that may work or what you may need to add.
Set a budget and plan to stick to it.
Visit the consignment store with a friend to get her opinion on possible selections.
Check for accessories at the consignment store that may complete the outfits.
Ask the shop owner if they can do any better on the price of any garments you want to purchase. I expect they would rather move the goods out the door than to hang onto them for the new year!
